| | Benton Flippen Old Time, New Times CD Benton Flippen Discography of CDs
Twenty-seven old-time country and string band tunes from a North Carolina fiddler and banjo player who sidesteps strict traditionalism to create a sound that's authentic yet still uniquely his own. Gathered from radio broadcasts and some 1993 studio sessions, these sides show why the modest Flippen was a longtime favorite on old-time and bluegrass festival stages. ~ Brian Beatty
OLD TIME, NEW TIMES contains previously unreleased radio transcriptions.
Personnel includes: Benton Flippen (violin).
Rolling Stone (12/29/94-1/12/95, p.174) - "...The rich articulate tone of Flippen's playing, his ebulient sawing on the square-dance tunes and the generosity of spirit that rings through his every note are wonders to behold. Long may he bow." Old Time, New Times Music Benton Flippen Old Time, New Times Songs | 1. | Bile Them Cabbage Down |

| | Taylor Swift Fearless CDs (2008) With DVD; Bonus Tracks; Special Edition
Old Time, New Times
$13.99 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps twice that age--a sly trick for the 18-year-old Swift. There may be a hint of youthfulness to her singing but that's the only hint of girlishness here; her writing--and she had a hand in penning all 13 tracks here, with six of them bearing her solitary credit--is sharply, subtly crafted and the ...

| | John Kruth Everywhere You've Never Been CDs (2000)
Old Time, New Times
$16.45 John Kruth is turning into a major talent. Kruth’s humor is sly… (with) an understanding of how to craft a first-class lyric, offering a character study with all of Paul Simon’s scalpel-sharp focus and twice Simon’s wit. - The Star Ledger (Newark, New Jersey)His music is truly singular. It’s fun. It’s like Shel Silverstein colliding head-on with a Kalahari Bushman barn dance. – The Valley AdvocateJohn Kruth is impossible to peg – his omnivorous approach yields a wealth of riches, ranging from Mid-Eastern jams to Waits-like blues ballads to squirrelly jazz-pop ditties. - Dallas Morning NewsJohn Kruth makes great albums – Adrian BelewThe cat daddy of eternal hipness. - Beatle Bob (St. Louis)Everywhere You've Never Been - John Kruth's sixth album mixes catchy folk/pop tunes like Since I Quit Drinkin' Coffee and Too Much Purple with an exotic feel provided by four Moroccan drummers including Brahim Fribgane who has worked with Peter Gabriel. The disc also features reeds by George Young of Saturday Night Live and Paul Simon fame along with Klezmatic trumpeter Frank London and bass by Dave Dreiwitz of Ween. Lots of poetic lyrics over cool acoustic grooves. Eccentric, quirky, angular, and humorously abstract,Kruth isn't easy to categorize. He could be described as alternative pop/rock and alternative folk-rock (depending on the song. Even though Kruth isn't a jazz artist per se one can tell that the more abstract forms of jazz have influenced his work. Kruth has been influenced by Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, and the Beatles, but he isn't as accessible as those rockers; instead, he combines his folk-rock and British Invasion influences with the angularity and abstraction of avant-garde jazz. Kruth doesn't think twice about moving from one instrument to another. Mandolin is his main instrument but he is also heard on banjo, dulcimer, harmonica, flute, and kazoo. Like many of the post-bop and avant-garde jazz artists he admires, Kruth can be self-indulgent although not in a mindless, aimless way. Kruth, for all his eccentricity, is quite musical. There is a method to his madness, just as there is a method to Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman's madness. But again, Kruth isn't one to make a lot of compromises in order ...
