Traditional bluegrass vocalist James King's second set is as good as the first. Tenor singer Dudley Connell returns to supply great high harmony vocals. Highlights of this set include a strong, soulful version of West Virginia songwriter Hazel Dickens' A Few Old Memories, and Sharon Higgins' Crazy Heart. He's as likely to pick an old country song as a bluegrass chestnut, as shown by the Ernest Tubb and George Jones songs included here. Even Vince Gill's "When I Call Your Name" is made to sound like an old bluegrass classic. ~ Ben O'Connor

Lonesome And Then Some CD music
$14.35 This is another excellent effort from King, an outstanding traditional bluegrass vocalist who is heavily influenced by country singers like George Jones, Buck Owens and Stonewall Jackson. King is not a songwriter, but he usually manages to dig up a batch of strong but obscure songs. This time is no exception, as he revives Jackson's "Big House on the Corner," and Leon Payne's "They'll Never Take Her Love From Me," and songs written or made famous by Ernest Tubb, Johnnie and ...
| | Richard Shindell Somewhere Near Paterson CD (2000)
Lonesome And Then Some music CDs
$17.69 Though Richard Shindell's music has been categorized under the "folk" rubric, that label tells only part of the story. The instrumental skeletons of these songs are built upon plucked acoustic guitar and the lyrics sketch out a world-weary cast of characters with a rare kind of writerly precision, but Shindell isn't afraid to bring electric guitar, driving drums, and Celtic accents into the mix where needed.
The album-opening "Confession," which is bathed in sheets of electrified guitar, is a first-person account of a Wall Street rainmaker's search for meaning in his life. Though he boasts to a bartender that he "can make a quarter million / Just walking in [his] sleep," he's plagued by nightmares and inexplicable fits of hysteria. Other highlights include the buoying "My Love Will Follow You," whose backing ...
