STRAWBERRIES MEAN LOVE, unless you're allergic, in which case they mean hives. That pretty much sums up the two likely responses to the Strawberry Alarm Clock, Santa Barbara's first and best exponent of flower power-era psychedelic pop. Either you'll find their catchy pop tunes, laced with pseudo-profound lyrics and cool trippy production effects, to be potent reminders of a certain place and time, or you'll find it all extremely calculated and commercial.
Actually, the Strawberry Alarm Clock were both at once, and as a result, songs like "Incense and Peppermints" and "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow" are both somehow more honest evocations of the real spirit of '67 as most people actually experienced it and, frankly, much better pop songs than, say, "Somebody To Love." This anthology, a remastered and expanded version of a previous collection on the excellent UK reissue label Ace/Big Beat, is the best SAC experience.
Incense & Peppermints, Tomorrow + Uni 1967-68.

Strawberry Alarm Clock This obscure group from Frisco has two big hits with Incense and Peppermints and Tomorrow; these are their best compositions and my favorite ones. The rest of the album is more or less listeneable, specially if you like psychedelic Doors' like music. Submitted by casas7 (Canóvanas, PUERTO RICO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Strawberry Alarming Indeed I buy CDs now and then for one song (thanks to the death of Napster) and this is an example of that practice. The band is mediocre at best but kind of funny if you still do acid. The song I wanted was "Pretty Song from 'Psych-Out'" and once I loaded the song onto iTunes, I gave only a cursory listen to the rest of the CD. I couldn't get through most of the songs. "Psych-Out" was a Dick Clark produced 'hippie' movie, written by Jack Nicholson (who also starred) along with Bruce Dern. I was just a kid - I liked the song. If you don't expect much, go for this CD. Submitted by a reviewer (Chandler, AZ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Nas Illmatic: 10th Anniversary Platinum Edition CDs (1994) Bonus Tracks; Anniversary Edition
Strawberries Mean Love CD music
$6.75 Out of a seemingly endless array of hip hop albums, every now and again something fresh and powerful rises to the top of the pile. Hailing from the Queensbridge Housing Projects in Long Island City (home to Marley Marl among others), 20-year old Nasir "Nas" Jones is less concerned with being an impersonator than with being an originator, bypassing adolescent fantasies and B-boy braggadocio in favor of jazzy beats, rap noir realism and new answers to urban despair.
ILLMATIC is his story, a cautionary tale of the inner-city streets, and as Nas makes plain on his opener, "The Genesis," this is what he does, with or without a record contract, and it's going to be served up straight, no chaser. And because Nas has the courage to transcend popular trends, to separate himself from the ranks of wannabes and me-toos, he may be on the verge of inaugurating some stylistic changes of his own.
Production-wise, Nas has gathered together some of the superstars of the hip hop underground, producers the likes of Q-Tip, Pete Rock, L.E.S., DJ Premier and The Large Professor, but it is Nas's unique rhythmic cadences, his idiomatic sense of on-the-street wordplay, his disrespect for the high time and the empty rhyme that distinguishes ILLMATIC. When Nas rocks the mic, it's not a hedonist's wet dream, but a depiction of urban hope and despair, and thanks to Nas's poetic insights, he soon transports you there (in a manner seldom seen in black pop since the days of Stevie's INNERVISIONS and Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOIN' ON?).
Landmark 1994 debut from Queensbridge rapper mixed dope beats with elevated, poetic, but sternly street rhymes.
ILLMATIC is his story, a cautionary ...
