Kathy Troccoli's A Sentimental Christmas plays it pretty safe, even as Christmas albums go -- there's one new composition, "Only Always," but the other 11 selections (one a medley) are time-tested holiday standards performed with big-band arrangements. It's all very traditional, evoking images of warm fires and family gatherings, and that's exactly the kind of Christmas record most people will want. As an added bonus, Andy Williams duets with Troccoli on his standard "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year." ~ Steve Huey

School of the Arts – Winston-Salem, NC Description of project:Crisis Control Ministry (CCM) has started a new marketing / fundraising effort for the summer months on our event calendar. Summer is a time of the year that traditionally represents a downturn in donor’s support of our client services. With no other events, appeals or projects planned for the summer months, we decided to pursue the idea of developing a fundraising venture to help offset our organizational expenses, particularly those related to our vital client services. Unfortunately, our financially vulnerable neighbors experience crises year round and without an event to generate funds during the summer, our capacity to help those families in need throughout year becomes greatly diminished. The idea of organizing a benefit concert was discussed late last year with an expectation of involving a local artist, Jeffrey Dean Foster and a local small venue to generate funds and possibly a canned food drive. WIST Country Legends 98.3 radio, who has wanted to be involved with a Crisis Control Ministry project since last year’s Chopper Project, expressed interest in helping to sponsor a summer concert. That interest along with media support from The Winston-Salem Journal, Relish, FOX 8 TV, DADA and general backing of the idea from The Steven’s Center, SE Systems, and host of other companies, lead us to the Concert for Hope project. Why not try to organize a concert on a larger scale to be held in downtown Winston-Salem to benefit CCM as well as the downtown revitalization effort.Saturday, July 15, 2006, we hosted a Crisis Control Ministry benefit concert at the Steven’s Center featuring Texas singing / songwriting legend Billy Joe Shaver, a band at the forefront of the new roots music movement, Polecat Creek, and local well-respected artist, Jeffrey Dean Foster. This concert was promoted as a showcase of classic “Americana” singer / songwriters. Each artist has a different style from true “honky tonk” country, to roots / bluegrass, to an alternative country based rock n’ roll approach. One appealing feature of this trio is that though styles are slightly different, the approach to classic “Americana” style songwriting is consistent with all three.
