(1 Customer Review)
Third Day's debut album is a great introduction to this Southern Christian rock band, led by lead singer/guitarist Mac Powell. The band's style can be summarized as Hootie & the Blowfish meets Lynyrd Skynyrd meets Pearl Jam. The first album emphasizes the straight-ahead classic rock sound. It produced songs that would become Third Day concert fixtures -- like the dramatic "Thief," told from the point of view of one of the other criminals who were crucified with Jesus, the anthemic "Consuming Fire," and the sentimental "Love Song." Other good album tracks include the ballad "Take My Life," "Nothing at All," and the condemning "Did You Mean It?" This album easily has crossover appeal for people who don't normally listen to Christian rock. The band's musicianship and originality shines through. This album probably remains Third Day's purest, most focused work. 1997's Conspiracy No. 5 would bring in a more alternative grunge sound. The band has never been more accessible as right here. ~ Steven Jacobetz

Third Day
$11.65 TIME was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album.
Young folk-rockers Third Day have a message of Christian faith to deliver, and like many of their contemporaries, they do it not in the gospel format, but with a radio-ready sound that wouldn't sound out of place next to Tonic, Third Eye Blind, et al. Third Day proves fully capable of bristling, highly charged roots-rock, but they're also adept at a softer sound that incorporates smooth vocal harmonies and pealing acoustic guitar. Whether they're coming off like a more spiritual Black Crowes on the R&B-inflected "Took My Place" or keeping things down-home and acoustic on the gentle opening cut, "I've Always Loved You," the group never forgets its underlying mission, and the lyrics are full of faith, as well as detailed descriptions of all the conflict and strife that faith can bring about in the modern world. If Hootie & the Blowfish spent more time in church, they might sound something like this.
Principally recorded at Southern Tracks, Atlanta, Georgia.

Third Day's second album, Conspiracy, No. 5, is an intriguing blend of roots-rock and Christian punk. While not all of the cuts are successful, the tracks that work are dynamic, rousing and spiritual, showcasing Third Day's potential. ~ Leo Stanley

| | Jars Of Clay Much Afraid CD (1997)
Third Day
$12.65 MUCH AFRAID is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files.
Additional personnel includes: Kate St. John (English Horn); Greg Wells (bass, drums, percussion); Neil Conti (drums).
MUCH AFRAID won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album.
The follow-up to Jars of Clay's almost minimalist first album features a bigger sound, with a wider lyrical scope and a more solid, grownup production (by Steve Lipson, of Sting and Annie Lennox fame). These new developments give MUCH AFRAID a real sense of staying power. The Christian alternative rock group appears to have broken out of the often-narrow confines of the genre. There's a hint of psychedelia on "Overjoyed," some Bee Gees-style harmonizing on "Tea and Sympathy," and lush, '70s rock-esque arrangements throughout. Spirituality plays a more subtle role on MUCH AFRAID, but continues to be a vital theme. On songs like "Overjoyed" it is sometimes difficult to separate the personal from the divine. And that's probably just the way the band wants it.
Recorded at The Aquarium, London, England; Secret Sound, Franklin, Tennessee; 16th Avenue Sound, Nashville, Tennessee.

$8.99 The Prayer Cycle is a surprisingly spiritual and moving album masterminded by composer Jonathan Elias, featuring an all-star cast culled from the pop, rock, and world music arenas (including Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Alanis Morissette, Perry Farrell, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Ofra Haza, Salif Keita, and more). The album is structured as a nine-movement ...
| | African Voices (Songs Of Life) CD (1996)
Third Day
$11.89 A collection of songs (emphasis on the "song") from Africa. The point of this compilation is to showcase the beauty of the African vocal work. Unfortunately, this isn't necessarily Narada's full-fledged forte, and as a result, perhaps not a representative sample is taken. Nonetheless, they've got some good work on here. Ayub Ogada always pleases, as does Samite of Uganda. Detroit native Kevin Nathaniel isn't too bad on the mbira (he apparently studied under the great Ephat Mujuru), and the Diops (not related) both perform well on their respective pieces. It would appear that the only thing really binding these artists together is taking part in a Lincoln Center program for children at some point (presumably how Narada got hold of them all). The compilation isn't bad, but there are other, better ones available, along with full-length albums from most of the artists contained therein. ~ Adam Greenberg
