While devoted CCM fans may be most pleased with Smith's blatantly faith-based tunes (see the soaring "Great Is the Lord"), his pop-leaning numbers are equally, if not more, impressive in their ability to convey spiritual concerns in a more general way, as best revealed on his poignant crossover hit, "Place in This World." This Is Your Time CD (1999)
First Decade: 1983-1993 album for sale This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
THIS IS YOUR TIME was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album.
THIS IS YOUR TIME is Christian hit-maker and two-time Grammy winner Michael W. Smith's 13th studio effort. The singer found his inspiration for the collection in part from the Columbine High School massacre that took place in April 1999. Throughout, the singer urges listeners to make the most of their lives, and to live boldly despite the knowledge that the gift of life can be snuffed out at any time.
The album-opener, "Rince De," with its Celtic undercurrents, calls to mind verdant visions of wind-swept Irish coastlines. A seamless transition is then made to the fist-pumping "Hey You It's Me," is which the singer reminds Christians of the restorative power of their faith and the omnipresence of God. "I Will Be Your Friend" will remind Smith's fans of his chart-topping "I Swear." But what's most appealing about THIS IS YOUR TIME is that Smith couches his inspirational message in terms that are secular enough to allow music lovers of all faiths to enjoy this collection.

Live the Life CD (1998)
First Decade: 1983-1993 buy CD music Produced by Mark Heimermann, Michael W. Smith, Stephen Lipson.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
LIVE THE LIFE was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album.
On his eleventh album, Christian artist Michael W. Smith proves once again his ability to provide pop appeal while maintaining his integrity, as well as continuing his themes of thankfulness and deep religious faith. LIVE THE LIFE varies from Smith's previous albums in that he plays guitar rather than piano, lending an edgier, more assertive tone to the music. Highlights include the anthemic title track; the quirky "Love Me Good," and the touching "Hello, Goodbye," which was written for friends of Smith's whose new baby died. Smith attributes the themes of LIVE THE LIFE, as well as its title, to a quote by St. Francis of Assisi: "Preach the gospel to all the world and if necessary, use words."

I'll Lead You Home CD (1995)
First Decade: 1983-1993 CD music "Breakdown" contains a sample of the voice of Martin Luther King, Jr.
I'LL LEAD YOU HOME won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album.
Michael W. Smith is a man of unshaken faith, of that there's little doubt. And his music-making skills are equally strong, as he proves again on this latest effort. I'LL LEAD YOU HOME is full of the kind of songs Smith has made his trademark: steady, mid-tempo rock, with a clear, honest Christian message. And this time around, Smith has added a bit of street-wise flavor, with a more percussive, syncopated sound. The record's first track, "Cry For Love," reflects this new rhythmic feel, and Smith seems to be reaching out for a new segment of the listening audience with each funky (albeit mildly so) beat.
This spiritual songster has always been able to pen a tune, and the melodic strength of tracks like "Love" and "Crown Him With Many Crowns" is undeniable. He also possesses a well-groomed, stadium-ready vocal style, which he displays with typical passion. Other strong tracks include "Someday" and "Breathe In Me," in which Smith admits he's far from the perfect Christian: "I used to be so sensitive to the light that leads to where you are...now I've acquired these calluses, With the darkness of a cold and jaded heart."
Clearly, Smith is a man still struggling with his demons. His music, however, remains relentlessly upbeat, and his fans will not be disappointed. Once again, he has "led them home" to where they want to be most--listening to his message, and his music.
I'll Lead You Home became the highest-debuting Christian album in chart history, and it's easy to see why. Produced by Patrick Leonard, the album consolidated Michael W. Smith's inspirational and pop success, combining gospel songs with glistening, immaculate pop production. Smith had earned pop fans with his previous record, Change Your World, and I'll Lead You Home showed those listeners that his inspirational records were every bit as good as his pop records. That's because they shared the same kind of mainstream pop production -- the layered synths and guitars spoke to the listeners nearly as much as Smith's voice itself. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Go West Young Man CD (1990)
First Decade: 1983-1993 buy CD music With GO WEST YOUNG MAN, Christian pop performer Michael W. Smith made his first major attempt at courting the secular market. The plan worked wonderfully, with the record eventually going platinum, based largely on the success of the single "Place in This World," which showcases Smith's sensitive songcraft and emotive vocals. Paired with HEART IN MOTION by Smith's friend and frequent collaborator Amy Grant, the two releases make for the highest-profile early-1990s CCM crossover albums.

Second Decade 1993-2003 CD (2003)
First Decade: 1983-1993 songs The self-explanatory title of the SECOND DECADE: 1993-2002 anthology neatly frames that period of Michael W. Smith's career. As the disc unfolds, we hear Smith's Christianity-oriented lyrics wrapped around charging rock, pulsating pop, and fragile guitar and piano ballads. One is immediately struck by how much these songs have in common with the contemporaneous work of Christian pop acts like Third Day or Jars of Clay. However, the modifier in the album's title serves to remind us that Smith was forging his faith-based pop-rock sound well in advance of any of those artists. In fact, he pretty much led the way for the Christian rock sound that swamped the charts and the airwaves in the 1990s and 2000s. So this second summing-up is no mere vanity project, but a chronicle of where this pack-leader went next after he blazed the trail so many others came to follow.
