Too Short never had the skills or technique of LL Cool J or Big Daddy Kane, but what the Oakland rapper lacks in technique, he's always more than made up for with irresistible, '70s-inspired funk grooves that simply won't quit. When Short -- after enjoying a small cult following for a few years in Northern California -- joined a major label with Life Is...Too Short's predecessor, Born to Mack, too many East Coast MCs were inundating hip-hop with clichéd tracks consisting of only James Brown samples and a drum machine. Too Short, however, presented an attractive alternative with highly melodic, danceable tracks that made no secret of his love of '70s funk heroes like Parliament, the Ohio Players, and Cameo. This CD's X-rated, sexually explicit lyrics received their share of vehement criticism, and the MC responded that Too Short is an outrageous character who shouldn't be taken too seriously. Be that as it may, his commanding reflection on the drug plague, "City of Dope," underscores the fact that he's cheating himself artistically by not devoting more time to social commentary and less time to exploiting sex. ~ Alex Henderson

The best They just dont make em like this anymore. Some where along the line something happend to rap music. Its just not the same. Cusswords has the best beat of any rap song ever. He flows non-stop for 8 minutes with no chorus.... Incredible! The music today is garbage compared to this. They all need to go back to the roots with some oldschool beats. DR PIMP This is $hort Dog's best album, without doubt. All his albums are classic, but this one sits on the top. This is old skool rap at its best, with the beats and his lyrics at top notch. My favorite songs are CussWords, I Ain't Trippin', Pimp The Ho, and Don't Fight The Feelin'. CussWords goes for almost 8 minutes and not at one point in the song do u get sick of it! Amazing lyrics and the beat is just off the chain. I Ain't Trippin' has one of my favorite beats, just classic. This album is just completely dope, and proves he is the REAL PIMP! Not these wanna-be fakers such as 50 CENT. 50 cent aint no pimp, but its obvious his idol was $hort Dog. Get this album if u havent already, and if u into modern commercial crap, then u should pick this up too, and see who the real pimp is.

Still spicing up the Oakland scene, Too Short returns to the charts with his ninth album, COCKTAILS, citing that little has changed in the business...the music business, that is. While many rappers gain their respect by kicking verses off their tongue at a delirious pace, Too Short uses his well-developed pimp style to emphasize his slow rhyming flow.
"Ain't Nothing Like Pimpin'" opens the album with Short Dog's (a self-imposed nickname) definition of values. Shocking to those who aren't able to relate to the inner city mind-set, Too Short is unrepentant and unafraid to let everyone in on his ...
