TURNS INTO STONE is a collection of B-sides from UK singles, seven of them previously unreleased in North America.
THE STONE ROSES was one of those albums that defined a cultural moment-especially in the Roses' native England, where their music was the soundtrack for 1989's now-legendary summer of raves and Ecstasy. When the quartet released the classic, nine-minute single "Fool's Gold," mixing jangling/droning, psychedelic-tinged guitars with a slinky organ-and-bass groove and hypnotic percussion, it was like the world was theirs for the taking. Sadly, the Stone Roses lost their momentum in an unfortunate, protracted legal battle with their label, Silvertone Records, and never got the chance to build upon this amazing point. 1992's TURNS INTO STONE collects "Fools Gold," the extended mix of "Elephant Stone," and a handful of b-sides and EP tracks onto one convenient disc. Though the music is extraordinary, there's no escaping the sense that this was just a stopgap release.

The title is a joking reference to the messianic anticipation that built up in the years between the Manchester, England rock band's 1989 debut--which Britain's New Musical Express magazine ranked as the greatest album of the '80s--and this 1995 follow-up. It's also a description of the Stone Roses' sound, a sort of second coming of '60s and '70s blues-rock, re-born with a funk beat. Back in '89 it sounded like a revolution, and it was: crossing Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan with club music, it helped set the template for all British alternative rock to follow, from Blur to the revamped U2. The widely collected bootleg of early sessions is finally released officially. Apparently, the Stone Roses are appalled and didn't sanction this, which accounts for the lack of notes about these recordings. If various old sources are correct, the tracks are from demos they set down in 1985, probably with late producer/legend Martin Hannett, who produced their debut single. Thus, this is three or four years before they recut these looks at "I Wanna Be Adored" and "This Is the One" for their stunning debut LP. For these two tracks alone (and the three songs re-recorded for their first two singles), Garage Flower is history of the most illuminating kind! The songs are the same, but this would be around the time they changed their name from "English Rose" and gave up being a mod band. Thus, the playing (and recording) is harsh, primitive post-punk, closer to Killing Joke and their earliest days as the Clash-inspired "the Patrol" than anything else! McCoy Tyner's work with the John Coltrane Quartet is well documented, and this CD marks a welcome return to that format. Recorded live at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA, over New Year's, Joe Lovano does the honors in the tenor sax chair, while bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts hold the rhythm section together with honor, passion, and drive.
