Raised in the projects of Chicago's South Side, the young R. Kelly displayed an uncanny natural aptitude for the piano, and cut his teeth as a performer by playing a portable electric keyboard and singing with his homies out on the mean streets of the Windy City. The sounds of gospel music and the great romantic balladeers suffuse R. Kelly's work, and on 12 PLAY, his libidinous follow-up to BORN INTO THE 90'S, this gifted singer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist draws upon all his formative experiences to create a sensual, evolutionary style of contemporary R&B.
Evolutionary in that Kelly's a classic heart-throb (with virtuoso chops the likes of Freddie Jackson and Luther Vandross) who walks that historical line between the sacred and secular streams of black music. By overlaying a street-smart contemporary sensibility, with a gangsta-style image and discrete hip hop punctuations, Kelly has transformed R&B into a music that can hold its own on the charts with today's rhythm heavy rappers.
Animated by Kelly's keyboard prowess and arranging skills, the R&B hybrids on 12 PLAY reach extraordinary sensual heights on such foreplay classics as "Bump N' Grind" and the title tune, a heat and serve, oven ready dish on how to do the nasty: and from all the evidence, one can only assume R. Kelly's 12-play is thrice as nice as your standard, garden variety lover's 4-play. "Your body is a playground, let me lick you up and down" he urges his partner on "It Seems Like You're Ready," growing more fervent with each chorus, as background singers coo away suggestively. On tunes such as "Freak Dat Body," "Homie Lover Friend" and "I Like The Crotch On You," Kelly alternates hip-hop choruses with his own yearning tenor to powerful effect.

$8.99 R. was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "When A Woman's Fed Up" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
R. Kelly starts this disc off with a straight-up gospel sermon, and his vocal style is well-suited to it. He learned his craft in church, and he gives praise to God on the disc's liner notes. Of course, the second song is called "Hump Bounce," so that also tells you where this popular, strong-voiced soul singer is coming from.
Kelly sings about different aspects of love, sex, and relationships, with a style that owes much to those who came before him--Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, and a host of others who refined and perfected the art of expression through vocalization. His formula is simple: take a slow or mid-tempo modern R&B structure, add a healthy dose of gospel-inflected ...

R. Kelly proves that he's as prolific as he is talented on the two-disc set R., which not only culls together his most noteworthy and successful work, but is bursting with new tracks as well. Filled from start to finish with Kelly's unique blend of smooth vocal stylings and no-nonsense lyrical stance, this album also features the work of a few of his prominent friends--the opener, "Home Alone" sports a guest rap courtesy of Keith Murray, while "Money Makes The World Go Round" is graced by Nas.

"I Wish" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Few people have ever bought an R. Kelly record for its sophisticated lyrical innuendo, and on TP-2.COM Kelly offers more of the unabashedly carnal mack-daddy R&B that made him a pinup in the '90s. It's clear from the outset that Kelly ...

$16.89 Vintage soul music has long had a more welcome home in the United Kingdom than in the United States, where collectors and rabid fans have built a cottage industry out of trading and reissuing vintage R&B sides both famous and ridiculously obscure. Ady Croasdell and Randy Cozens are two British soul mavens who launched a "Rhythm 'n' Soul" club night in London in 1979, which has been continuing in one form or another ever since. Designed to replicate the mod-era dance nights that featured a wide variety of dance-friendly R&B sounds rather than just the Northern soul material that dominated the U.K. R&B scene, the club night's popularity led to Croasdell compiling a series of soul anthologies for the British Kent label, and with this set he goes back to the club dances that helped inspire it all. Croasdell's 20-page liner essay on the history of the 6T's Rhythm 'n' Soul Society will be tough going for most American readers (and more than a few in the U.K.), since it deals more with rivalries between ...
