One of E-40's best albums -- and along with Tha Hall of Game (1996), perhaps his best overall -- In a Major Way features the Bay Area rapper early in his career, when he was at his most inspired and focused. His previous solo releases (Federal, 1993; The Mail Man, 1993), as well as his work with the Click (Down and Dirty, 1994), had been formative and low-budget, released independently by his Sick Wid' It label in association with a regional distributor. Sure, some of that prior work was great, particularly The Mail Man and its breakout hit, "Captain Save a Hoe," but none of it compares to In a Major Way in terms of scale and consistency. Over the course of 16 tracks, E-40 collaborates with his Sick Wid' It stable of producers (Studio Ton, Mike Mosley, Sam Bostic) and rappers (B-Legit, Suga T, Celly Cel), along with outside talent. Newcomer Funk Daddy produces three tracks, including the standout "Sideways," while up-and-coming Bay Area rappers 2Pac, Mac Mall, and Spice 1 team up for another standout, "Dusted 'n' Disgusted." Besides these two standouts, highlights of In a Major Way include a pair of hit singles ("1-Luv," "Sprinkle Me") that broke into the Billboard Hot 100, plus "Da Bumble." In a Major Way does have its shortcomings, chief among them the production, which still sounds low-budget, if improved from prior releases. E-40 made the most of what he had to work with at the time, though, and for a mostly in-house album, In a Major Way is an impressive showcase of the talent at hand. E-40's raps would improve over the years, as would his production stable and his recording budget, yet few albums in his catalog rival In a Major Way, which track-for-track is remarkably solid and thoroughly entertaining. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Vibe (5/95, p.96) - "...Full of keyboards and rollicking, heavy bass lines, the songs...only make sense when booming from the back of a late-model car....One minute E-40 is rapping slow, the next he's crooning, and the next finds him moving on and off tempo in his own rapid style..." The Source (5/95, p.66) - 3.5 Stars - Dope - "...IN A MAJOR WAY is just that--beats and lyrics hittin' your chest cavity with force. It's straight mobb music for fools that like to roll or chill at barbecues..." E-40 did it again! E-40 is one of the most versatile, underlooked rappers out there so far. His lyrics are hard, hitting at the core of your being with a fresh upbeat tempo and wide variety of topics. Do not overlook E-40 and his talents! This cd is a sure winner! In A Major Way album
$8.49 After several years on the underground rap circuit, E-40 released his first great album, In a Major Way, in 1995, and a year later he released his second, Tha Hall of Game, a similarly fashioned album that some fans believe is the better of the two. E-40 once again turns to producers Studio Ton, Mike Mosely, and Kevin Gardner, who had worked with him previously, but more importantly, he adds others to his production stable, employing the talents of Bay Area beatmakers Ant Banks, Rick Rock, and Tone Capone. Consequently, the productions of Tha Hall of Game are diverse while, at the same time, stylistically native to the Bay Area. As for featured guests, E-40 also keeps his company regional, employing 2Pac and Spice 1 -- who had previously appeared on In a Major Way -- on "Million ...

In A Major Way CD music
$16.09 E-40's ELEMENT OF SURPRISE is like a cold splash of water in the face, startling the listener with a head-on dose of street reality. The most startling aspect of the album is E-40's unique rapping style; with his mile-a-minute rhymes, he makes Onyx sound like a bunch of slackers. His lyrics go by at such a breakneck pace that, while one is able to glean the general intent of the lyrics, his voice becomes another instrument, taking a place in the mix that's more physical than cerebral. He's pretty prolific, too, as evidenced by the 24 cuts spread out over ELEMENTS OF SURPRISE's two discs. Too Short, Master P and others make guest appearances on these funk-inflected tracks, but this is E-40's show ...
| | Guide To Global Dance CD (2000) (Import) Japan
In A Major Way music CDs
$14.69 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed DJ Pete Lawrence.
Of all the projects undertaken by the Rough Guide's music team, this one had to be the most intimidating. How does one accurately give a picture of the innovations in global music culture -- especially with a transcultural bent, on a single CD with 12 tracks? Peter Lawrence had the unenviable job of coming up with just such an offering. The only thing that made the gig a plus is that he was accenting "global dance" as in dance culture, so hybrids of all kinds were allowable. He wasted no time; the first track by Tunisian/French DJ duo Smadj is a frenetic trip through techno, drum'n'bass, and folk musics from the Middle East, where ouds, keyboards, ambient textures, djembe drums, and drum loops careen into one another shifting and changing as they do -- the track is all energy and force. From here the CD moves to Jazzanova, a German ensemble that practices a mixology of current electro techniques and injects them into the current wave of Brazilian jazz fusion. Given how club-oriented both these selections are, it would seem easy to get a bead on where Lawrence is going with his global dance theme. But not so fast. There are no breakbeats on former Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen's Nigerian Afro-funk. As slippery and dark as his late employers, it also goes deeper and reaches wider. Allen is not content to reference James Brown, Funkadelic, and American jazzers. This track, "Get Together," is from his classic album Nepa from 1982. Here organs and electric pianos click through the drums' polyrhythmic pace and create a trance-like rhythm for dancers and singers to chant along with the lyric. Dub techniques float ...
