JARS OF CLAY was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album. Jars of Clay approach progressive Christian music from a refreshing angle, mixing a simple acoustic folk sound with a hip-hop beat and decidedly un-preachy yet powerfully religious lyrics. Vocalist Dan Haseltine imbues lines like "They say that I can walk on water/If I would follow and believe/ With faith like a child," with palpable sincerity and a charismatic vocal style. Particularly strong are the two tracks produced by Adrian Belew, an eccentric guitarist who's worked with David Bowie, Peter Gabriel and the Talking Heads among others. "Liquid" makes inventive use of otherworldly Gregorian chant samples and an orchestral background, and includes Belew himself on bass and mandolin. JARS OF CLAY is a mature effort by a fiercely devout group of musicians with a commanding yet humble religious message to convey. Personnel: Dan Haseltine (vocals, programming); Matt Odmark (guitar, programming); Stephen Mason (guitar, background vocals); Matt Bronleewe (acoustic guitar); Jonathan Yudkin (mandolin, fiddle); Adrian Belew (mandolin); Noah Evens, Carl Gorodetzky, Pamela Sixfin (violin); Jim Grosjean (viola); John Catchings (cello); Sam Levine (recorder); Bobby G. ...See Full Description

| terrific music the first time i heard this disc, i didn't even realize it's content was religious. that fact was completely overshadow'd by the music. it's imaginative, thoughtful, and imbued with real feeling. this band clearly cares about what it says and how it says it. at no time do you feel beaten over the head by the subject matter. the music's just too good. adrian belew's contribution is all over this disc and muchly appreciated. i bought this disc years ago, but unlike many others it still gets steady rotation in the car. check it out. you'll not be disappointed. | jars of clay refreshing very impressive first effort by this group. don't be put off by "gospel tag", as they are not about ramming it down your throat. the message is there if you you want to hear it, but you can also enjoy the album juts for the music. liquid is the best track with a strong beat and avery catchy chorus, great to sing along to. i will be purchasing more from jars of clay. | OK album Not bad for a Christian band. OK otherwise. By a reviewer (Hamden, CT) |
| Jars of Awesome Music Jars of Clay is probably the coolest, most unique album I've ever heard from a Christian or secular band. Liquid is an awesome song. The structure of the song is perfect: a violin opening with a Catholic easter mass chant with an acoustic progressive rock sound. Flood is really good, too, along with Like A Child. The hidden track on the end of Blind, Four Seven, is also a really good song. Overall, I'd have to say that every song on the album is great and that the CD is really good and creative.
