Samples include "Future Shock" (as performed by Curtis Mayfield), "Backstrokin'" (as performed by The Fatback Band), "Munchies For Your Love" (as performed by Bootsy Collins) and "Angel" (as performed by Wes Montgomery).
Gangsta rap, from the Lone Star State. This disc is straight-up real, no punches pulled, from first cut to last--and you know these guys are from down south, when "ten" sounds like "tee-an." The good news is that RIDIN' DIRTY also has its fair share of listenable, soulful rap music. From the first cut, which samples the Isley Brothers' "Ain't I Been Good to You," Underground Kingz show good taste in backing music. "Pinky Ring," a smooth, flowing paean to pimpdom, samples Curtis Mayfield's "Future Shock." Even jazz-guitar great Wes Montgomery gets a nod, in the title track.
The songs are about drug dealing and street life, and the Kingz see both sides of that glimmering, dangerous coin: "One day you're here, baby, and then you're gone." The lyrics are as rough and raw as it gets. But throughout, UGK manage to walk that fine line between singing the praises of gang/drug life, and realizing, always realizing, that it's a one-way street to either the boneyard or the big house.
UGK's third album, Ridin' Dirty, is their first to be released by a major label, which gives you some sort of indication of how far the group has gone in four short years. In that span of time, UGK scaled to the top of the small but vicious hip-hop scene in the Southern United States, creating a distinctive gangsta hybrid in the process. UGK is just as hedonistic and materialistic as those rappers out on the West Coast, but they don't infuse their music with the deep funk of the Cali scene, nor do they revel in the buoyant bass of their Miami brethren. Instead, they take a more stripped-down approach, which is all the better to hear their celebrations of money, drugs, women -- all of the typical gangsta accessories. If UGK doesn't really have something new to say, at least they have come up with an engaging way to say it -- the sound of their record is vibrant and direct, bringing you right into the thick of things. It's not exceptional gangsta rap, but it is entertaining. ~ Leo Stanley

Ridin' Dirty UGK the original tha best! This ain't chamillionaire's ridin' dirty. i just wanna clear that up for the last time!!!!! so to the album itself. i'd hardly give it five stars, but i definitely think it deserves the four it's getting. if it was possible, i would have given it another half star. addictive cuts pretty much the whole way through and i felt like i knew the album already and not only that, but i felt as though i'd heard and liked it somewhere else before. initially, that sort of second half from touched onward was a bit blah, but it's growin' on me. oh yeah, and jus' cos i say ridin' dirty, i'm not talkin' chamillionairre for god's sake!!! UGK's what southern rap's all about!!! Submitted by Trent Wellard (Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Ridin' Dirty
$12.15 This third installment in the series specially crafted by Collectables for WSNI FM focuses on the greatest hits of one of the most revered labels in pop music: Motown. With every single one of the 25 songs contained herein being either a chart-topper or a major hit, it's hard to refute this as nothing more than an extremely well-sequenced compilation covering Motown's glory years, and at an economically sensible price, it serves as an ideal starting point to those unfamiliar with Motown's vast arsenal of soulful hits. Simply outstanding from start to finish.~ Rob Theakston
Collectables' 2003 compilation WCBS FM: Motown, Soul and Rock n Roll - Motown delivers 25 tracks of pure Motown gold. It was put together by Joe McCoy from WCBS FM and plays like what one might hope the radio would sound like in heaven. Every song is a hit and the disc flows like a river of sweet champagne. The songs are a fine mix of up-tempo dancefloor fillers like the Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman" and the Contours' "Do You Love Me" and heartbroken ballads like the Temptations' "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" and Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted." The only flaw in the presentation is the duplication of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Both Gladys Knight's and Marvin Gaye's version are included at the expense of some other Motown classic. | | Jurassic 5 Feedback CD (2006) Edited
Ridin' Dirty
$10.39 As one of hip-hop's most unique and charismatic contemporary crews, Jurassic 5 have been laying down positive lyrics with true-school influenced rhyme schemes since they first appeared on the original LYRICIST LOUNGE compilation. Album three is more of the same from the tight-knit quintet of MCs, but that's certainly no complaint. With solid production from DJ Numark, Salaam Remi, and Scott Storch, the J5 prove themselves to be the masters of feel-good, backpack rap.
While some hip-hop purists may be quick to point out the crossover feel of this record (which includes two guest spots from Dave Matthews Band), Jurassic 5 manage to stay true to the original sound, making the off-beat collaborations work and putting down some of the most consistently clever flows of hip-hop's third decade. FEEDBACK also includes a few departure tracks like "Brown Girl," the crew's fresh spin on crunk, and the Latin guitar-laced instrumental "Canto De Ossanha."
Leading up to the release of Feedback, Jurassic 5 rapper Soup distanced his group from the rap underground that had embraced his music, but apparently had not paid enough of his bills. "It's a step up for us because we have been basically known as an underground group....We've been known as a backpacker group." Indeed, after years of bringing their live show to thousands of scattered festival-goers (Lollapalooza, Warped, Bonnaroo, Reading), the group reached for the same type of commercialized sweet ...
