The reason for the sudden success had more to do with good marketing than the music itself, since Backstreet's Back is nearly identical to Backstreet Boys. Loaded with dance-pop and ballads, the album is as glossy as mainstream pop can possibly be. That slick production adds luster to the singles "Quit Playin' Games (With My Heart)" and "As Long as You Love Me," making them as irresistible as teen pop can be. There isn't anything else that really matches those twin peaks, but there's enough craft, hooks, and fun on the rest of the album to make it quite entertaining. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The Backstreet Boys' eponymous debut album was released in America nearly a full year after its original European release, and the wait proved to be a blessing in disguise. In that year, light dance-pop -- such as the Spice Girls and Hanson -- returned to the top of the American charts, paving the way for the frothy pleasures of Backstreet Boys. Like those groups, the Backstreet Boys divide their time between catchy, up-tempo dance numbers and syrupy ballads, and they are as reliant on their personality as they are their talent. As a result, there are a couple of slow spots on the record, but each of the singles, plus a handful of album tracks, are potent combinations of professional hooks and personal charm that make Backstreet Boys a thoroughly enjoyable affair. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Don't be scared, mom and dad; though the Backstreet Boys employ a little rapping and hip-hop beat wizardy in their dance-pop amalgam, there's no R-rated gangsta mythology at work on their self-titled debut smash. And though this quartet of video-friendly fresh-faced boys has garnered many superficial comparisons to former teen idols New Kids On The Block, the Backstreet Boys sound has a bit more going for it. A more streetwise approach, hook-filled arrangements, a distinctive mixture of rapping and vocal harmonies and an endless supply of floor-shaking dance beats are the distinguishing marks of these platinum-plus pop poster boys. | | Savage Garden CD (1997)
Backstreet Boys
$7.59 Savage Garden: Daniel Jones (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming); Darren Hayes (vocals). Additional personnel: Rex Goh (guitar); Alex Hewitson (bass); Terapai Richmond (drums, percussion). Personnel: Daniel Jones (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Darren Hayes (vocals, background vocals); Rex Goh (guitar); Charles Fisher (viola); Jackie Orzaczky (Fender Rhodes piano); Terpain Richmond (drums, percussion). Audio Mixers: Chris Lord-Alge; Mike Pela. Illustrator: Hieronymus Bosch. Photographer: Yelena Yemchuk. Savage Garden is light, catchy, and undeniably melodic, and it's hard to believe they released their debut album in the late, not early, '90s. It's easy to say that their breakthrough single, "I Want You," sounds like a revamped Roxette, but it's accurate -- it has a breezy chorus and frothy production that make it an appealing slice of mainstream pop, the kind banished from the airwaves in 1992. Occasionally, Savage Garden reach that peak elsewhere on their eponymous debut -- most notably on the second single "To the Moon and Back" and "Truly Madly Deeply" -- but they lack the vision and discipline to make the record anything more than fitfully entertaining. But those highlights almost make the album worthwhile. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Big, expansive Euro-pop, Australian ...
| | Madonna Ray Of Light CD (1998)
Backstreet Boys
$6.09 Personnel: Madonna (vocals); William Orbit (guitar, electronics); Mark Moreau (guitar); Pablo Cook (flute); Marius De Vries (keyboards, programming); Fergus Gerrand (drums, percussion); Steve Sidelnyk (programming); Donna DeLory, Niki Harris (background vocals). Producers: Madonna, William Orbit, Patrick Leonard, Marius De Vries. Recorded at Larrabee Studios North, Universal City, California. RAY OF LIGHT won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album and for Best Recording Package, and was nominated for Album Of The Year. "Ray Of Light" won the 1999 Grammy for Best Dance Recording and Best Short Form Music Video, and was nominated for Record Of The Year. Returning to pop after a four-year hiatus, Madonna enlisted respected techno producer William Orbit as her collaborator for Ray of Light, a self-conscious effort to stay abreast of contemporary trends. Unlike other veteran artists who attempted to come to terms with electronica, Madonna was always a dance artist, so it's no real shock to hear her sing over breakbeats, pulsating electronics, and blunted trip-hop beats. Still, it's mildly surprising that it works as well as it does, largely due to Madonna and Orbit's subtle attack. They've reigned in the beats, tamed electronica's eccentricities, and retained her flair for pop melodies, creating the first mainstream ...

| | DJ Spooky Celestial Mechanix: The Blue Series Mastermix CDs (2004)
Backstreet Boys
$13.75 Horns echo over broken beats and voices ping and pong as DJ Spooky takes all of the releases in Thirsty Ear's Blue Series and gives them some serious crinkling, crumpling, and stretching on Celestial Mechanix: The Blue Series Mastermix. The challenge of the Blue Series is to take artists from different genres and break down the stylistic barriers between them. Heavy in concept for sure, but the series has offered up more than its fair share of outstanding records. Many releases have delivered on Thirsty Ear's promise of hearing "the shape of jazz to come," but Celestial Mechanix is all quirky, illbient, and echoing Spooky. Then again, with such a sprawling selection of tracks that are already unclassifiable, what was the guy to do? The tracks on the first disc are remixes that contain "elements" of different Blue Series releases, and it's the lesser of the two discs. If it wasn't for all the flutes, saxes, and the voice of Saul Williams, this could be an old Byzar or mid-period Ben Neill record with that atmosphere-over-direction aesthetic and a good bit of excusable noodling (the exception is Spooky's moving, melancholy, and purposeful take on Craig Taborn's "Shining Through"). ...

| | Alaska's Kit & The Kaboodles Diamond In The Rough CD (2009)
Backstreet Boys
$12.69 A talented 12 year old with a voice and stage presence twice her age! Alaska's Kit has gathered an impressive band of "Kaboodles," some of Juneau's finest musicians as band members and for recording her first professional CD. A mixture of big band sounds and folksy, traditional, classic and country music with a jazz touch.Letter from Kit -Hey everybody - this is Kit. I'm so pleased to have this CD out and I'm glad you bought it! It is called Diamond in the Rough because this CD is still a work in progress and we hope to have a fully polished CD sometime soon. There are a lot of people who I would like to thank for helping me to get to where I am today. Missouri Smyth, the best choir director in all the world, who taught me so much about music in the five years I was in the Alaska Youth Choir. Kari Groven, my voice coach from Norway, who sure knows how to tame jazz! The "uncle" who helped inspire me to do music, Sean Tracey, the absolute best harmonica player in town. Simon Taylor who came in when he was absolutely exhausted from a full day of work and could still record the bass while almost asleep (that is how good he is)! Top saxophonist, Doug Bridges, who kept on recording until his "chops" could no longer move! Dale McFarlin, who kept the beat, and could make thunder sound musical. I could not believe though that I was lucky enough to get John Knight to record on my CD, the best pedal steel player ever! And a HUGE thank you to Steve Wilde for showing me ...
