At the beginning of the '90s, R. Kelly was seen as a lewd, lascivious soulman. By the end of the decade, he had stripped those adjectives away and was seen as a contemporary equivalent of Marvin Gaye, thanks to the enormous success of "I Believe I Can Fly." Appropriately, R., the double-disc album that followed "I Believe I Can Fly"'s parent album, finds Kelly trying to live up to that legacy. He may be talented, but he has neither the vision nor the depth to match such classic soulmen as Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Prince, or Michael Jackson, all artists he emulates on R. Kelly's main strength is fusing contemporary material together into a slick, palatable, radio-ready record. Nobody else could have Jay-Z and Celine Dion on his album, and he's about the only one who could make it work, since he can work sensuous grooves as well as he can deliver a soaring ballad. To some, this may sound like nothing more than calculation -- a big part of the reason why he doesn't instantly enter the hall of greats -- because it's easy to see how he pieces it all together. When he's on, however, such calculation doesn't really matter, since it all flows, but such incidents only occur through about 40 percent of R. That's a major problem, considering the sheer length of the album. Clocking in at 29 long tracks, it takes real effort to sit through the record from beginning to end, especially since Kelly begins to repeat himself. If it was pruned a bit, the album would arguably be his best. As it stands, R. is an admirable effort, one that is among his better records even with all of its faults. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
R. Kelly proves that he's as prolific as he is talented on the two-disc set R., which not only culls together his most noteworthy and successful work, but is bursting with new tracks as well. Filled from start to finish with Kelly's unique blend ofSpin (12/98, pp.180-182) - 7 (out of 10) - "...On his fourth album, the dude with the shades and shiny pate juggles street and schlock, Foxy Bown and Celine Dion, smoove-groove erotomania and anguished contrition. Prolonged exposure may leave you wondering if he isn't actually schizophrenic..."
Q (12/99, p.118) - Stars (out of 5) - "...brooding, intense songs of regret and self-accusation over broken affairs, delivered in passionate, slowburning style....a tremendous accomplishment, a watershed for Kelly, who has never been so accessible, so memorable, so interesting..."
Mojo (Publisher) (1/99, p.102) - "A rare beast this, a double CD over two hours long that doesn't outstay its welcome....All soul giants need songs like [these] in the repertoire."

5 stars first ever r. kelly album i ever bought
not only was this the very first r. kelly album i ever bought, but i think next to 12play it's his best. i could have sworn i'd heard a nice chunk of it before. this was the first ever double cd i ever bought where neither disc had weak moments as well. the only down side is that i wish i'd bought it at a better time. i bought it not long after i'd heard bout the guy's paedophilia allogations, damn!

R. Kelly's debut album with Public Announcement from a year earlier, Born into the 90s, had been a fine new jack swing album, but it hardly foreshadowed the astonishing heights the all-around amazing producer/songwriter/singer summits on 12 Play, a likewise all-around amazing album with a little bit of something for everyone. There are a couple moments on 12 Play that are reminiscent of Born Into the 90s, specifically the sung-rapped ones: "Freak Dat Body" and "Back to the Hood of Things." These tend to be the least interesting of the 12 songs here, however, and their intermittent, mid-album sequencing is perhaps no coincidence. Rather, it's the swooning balladry of "Honey Love," a late-album gem from Born Into the 90s, that Kelly reprises to great success throughout 12 Play. The decision to do away with Public Announcement for the most part here is a wise one, as Kelly seems to have a real gift for late-night come-ons as well as elaborately produced musical accompaniment that's similarly alluring, as evidenced on the album-opening "Your Body's Callin'." This gentle song's inescapable pleading is then followed by another absolutely brilliant four minutes of tantalization, "Bump n' Grind," which ease

R. Kelly tames his ambitions a bit on TP-2.Com, assembling a simple sequel to his classic 12 Play album from 1993 rather than another epic venture like his double-disc, all-bases-covered R. album from 1998. The straightforwardness is somewhat of a welcome endeavor. As breathtaking as had been R. -- an album that straddled the huge gap between the sort of radio pop associated with Celine Dion as well as the street rap of Jay-Z and Nas -- it also seemed too overblown at times, as if Kelly had something to prove during an era of double-disc epic rap albums. So to see him return to the simple singles approach of 12 Play is refreshing, particularly since he has plenty of singles to work with here, just as he had with TP-1. Kelly furthermore unleashes his singles -- "I Wish," a mass-appeal voca

Greatest Hits is a strange release. Sure, Tupac Shakur had more than enough hits to make a terrific compilation, but its appearance in the fall of 1998 felt a bit like another opportunity to milk his catalog, simply because of the plethora of releases, from previously unheard recordings to interview discs and bootlegs. Even with these misgivings taken into account, it has to be said that Greatest Hits does its job well. Given that it runs 25 tracks and two CDs, some may argue that it does its job a little too well, but the fact of the matter is, this contains all of his big hits, from "Keep Ya Head Up" and "Dear Mama" to "California Love" and "I Ain't Mad at Cha." Some may argue that it would have been more effective if it was sequenced in chronological order, but this remains the best place for casual listeners to get all the 2Pac they need. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Though posthumous albums are often only a record company's vision of how to make more money, 2PAC's GREATEST HITS is just what it promises; a collection of all his hottest tracks, chart toppers, and street jams. Tracks from his time spent on both Interscope Records and Death Row Records are included, as are three previously unreleased tracks, "Unconditional Love," "God Bless the Dead" and "Troublesome

112, Puff Daddy's four-man crew of smooth-crooning R&B loverboys, come on sticky and earnest throughout their second album, Room 112, combining old-school doo wop harmonies with '90s hip-hop trappings. Because this is a Puffy project, an occasional heavy-handed sample creeps in for a visit (e.g., the use of Shawn Colvin's "Sunny Came Home" during one tune). The best cut here is "Love Me," a bit of new jack breakdown that swings and hammers with convincing verve and groove. ~ Michael Gallucci
112, Puff Daddy's four-man crew of smooth-crooning R&B loverboys, come on so aggressively sticky and heart-on-sleeve earnest throughout their second album, Room 112, that it's often difficult to wade through the torrent of molasses pouring down and through each of the songs. Combining old-school doo wop harmonies with '90s hip-hop trappings -- robotic beats, mechanic vocals, half-baked ideas -- 112 do very little to distinguish themselves from the pack. The best of the late-'90s R&B crooning quartets ups the musical ante on their sophomore album, lacing the silky-smooth grooves with splashes of street-tough shouts that are meant to antagonize as much as they are to seduce. And for a good deal of Enter the Dru, the formula works. There's a gutsy edge to the songs here (especially the hard-knocking "How Deep Is You

Bop Boy
Bob Mintzer Bop Boy CD  (2002) (Import) Japan

R.
CD $47.29
Recorded over two days in 2002, Bop Boy was previously only available in Japan on the Cheetah label. Thanks to Explore and their excellent catalog of diverse jazz and classical recordings, it is now available in the United States as well. Unlike Bob Mintzer's '80s offerings on Cheetah (Source and Papa Lips), the band used on this session is a quartet made up of star talent: bassist Eddie Gómez, the elegant pianist Steve Kuhn, and drummer Steve Gadd. On first glance it might appear that Gadd is out of place among these more subtle members of the rhythm section. Being a consummate professional as a studio musician, Gadd is an excellent jazz drummer adding grace, subtlety and tension to a very sophisticated rhythm section. Mintzer a generation younger than Gómez, and Kuhn leads this band through killer arrangements of a fine batch of standards and a trio of top-flight originals. Beginning with Kenny Dorham's and Wynton Kelly's "Blue Bossa," the swing quotient is high here. Kuhn is at his most muscular on this hard bop gem, pushing his minors and thirds right into the rim shots by Gadd. Mintzer's solo is full of deep blues feeling and economy. Mintzer wrote the title track; it is what it claims to be: bebop pure and simple. Beginning with a galloping pace set by Gómez, Gadd's ride cymbal provides fuel and Kuhn plays selectively angular chords, moving right into Mintzer's stating the head and solo. Kuhn's playing around the beat as the tune goes on reveals excellent counterpoint to what's being laid down by the tenor player. The tenderness with which an edgy player like Mintzer approaches "Embraceable You" is remarkable, and here Kuhn's utterly moving pianism is at its best. This is followed by a lovely soft samba called "Francisca" written by Toninho Horta. "Invitation" brings the harder edge of bluesy, post-bop into the area, and the interplay between Gómez and Gadd is nearly symbiotic. Two Mintzer originals follow, and the stroll of "Re-Re" is contrasted in a mirror with the knotty twist and turn sprint of "Runferyerlife." The reading of "St. James Infirmary" brings the tune back to the kind of mournful blues ballad it began is. Mintzer's tone on the bass clarinet is startling. He goes underneath the melody for his phrasing and fills as Kuhn offers a constant, slowly evolving wash of minor chord voicings underneath him. The ballad "Why Did I Choose You" is a perfect way to send things off as it puts on shining display the intuitive interaction between Kuhn -- a sublime melodist through his wide array of textured chord shapes and his sense of space and economy with the right hand in his solo. Gómez is wonderful here, flowing into the body of the tune, allowing for Gadd to lay out and enter at will. Mintzer's solo is an emotive one, but never undercuts or overwhelms the tune. Bop Boy is one of the most satisfying dates in his long career as a leader, a composer, and as an arranger. ~ Thom Jurek

Now three volumes old, the Definitive Jux Presents series pleases fans with new and exclusive tracks and makes for a good introduction for newcomers with its roster-spanning lineup. As underwhelming as his debut was, S.A. Smash offers up a contender with "Devil in the Hole," a track so lively, tight, and catchy you can close your eyes and see the Hype Williams video. C-Rayz Walz is another rapper who could actually slip into the mainstream -- and his "Jello" is excellent -- but the rest of the collection sticks with the classic, grimy and gritty Definitive Jux sound. Camutao and the man behind Definitive Jux, El-P, give Moby, P. Diddy, and Usher a good slap on "WMR," an underground anthem that turns "stereo" into a six-syllable word. El-P's also behind the first-rate "Oxycontin, Pt. 2" -- a compelling narrative about respect between drug addict and drug dealer -- but he's also turned over more of the album than usual to other producers. Nasa and Aesop Rock get plenty of turns, but it's DJ paWL who trumps them all with a fresh, futuristic production on Hangar 18's track and a remix of Aesop Rock. Spreading out the consecutive academic tracks that slow down the beginning would have helped make this collection more necessary, and the debut from the promised El-P and S.A. Smash project, Central Services, is notably absent. Regardless, Definitive Jux Presents, Vol. 3 maintains the label's respected status and points to a bright future. ~ David Jeffries
C-Rayz Walz is another rapper who could actually slip into the mainstream -- and his "Jello" is excellent -- but the rest of the collection sticks with the classic, grimy, and gritty Definitive Jux sound. [Upon its release, Definitive Jux Presents, Vol. 3 was packaged with a bonus DVD with videos from El-P, Mr. Lif, and C-Rayz
