| | Commissioned Reunion: Live CDs (2002)
State Of Mind music CDs
$16.05 From the long, elaborate intro to this live album, you might think you had popped in a Pink Floyd disc by mistake. Thankfully, things right themselves in short order, as the smooth but complex pop/gospel harmonies of this much-loved group take center stage. Though members of the Commissioned have gone on to solo careers (most notably the solo gospel sensation Fred Hammond), it was as an ensemble that these men first endeared themselves to scads of contemporary gospel enthusiasts. The reunion concert documented here is a major event for that audience, and the energy going back and forth between the crowd and the Commissioned is audible. From the blazing, horn-punctuated pop-funk of "I'm Going On" to the gentle, R&B-laced ballad "Lay Your Troubles Down," the group testifies with such soulfulness that it's difficult to imagine why they ever separated in the first place.
Recorded live Straight Gate Church, Detroit, Michigan on October 26, 2001.

| | Kirk Franklin Hero CD (2005)
State Of Mind CD music
$9.59 Though testimonies of faith and questions of morality are still at the heart of Kirk Franklin's message, 2005's HERO represents something of a musical departure for the gospel superstar. Recorded with a full orchestra--complete with lush strings and driving horns--HERO is one of Franklin's most musically ambitious outings.
Featuring guest appearances by Stevie Wonder ("Why"), Dorinda Clark-Cole ("Hero"), and Yolanda Adams ("Afterwhile"), not to mention a song that utilizes a Tears for Fears sample ( "Let It Go"), the album offers plenty of variety, and a few surprises, in addition to its large-scale arrangements. Franklin manages to integrate these new elements perfectly into the celebratory and healing ...

| | Vern Gosdin Time Stood Still CD (1998)
State Of Mind songs
$9.25 On his second outing for American Harvest, Vern Gosdin put himself in the producer's chair with Robert John Jones and hired some of the finest musicians in Nash Vegas -- musicians fine enough to interpret his idea of traditional country music -- to accompany him. Cats like Pete Drake, Weldon Myrick, Jerry Douglas, Buddy Spicher, Vince Gill, Kenny Malone, Randy Scruggs, and others signed up for duty on a typically stunning Gosdin set. Interestingly, though a little less than half of the material was written by Gosdin, all of it could have been. The songs seamlessly segue into one another; whether it's the mid-tempo love song "It's Only Love Again," the shimmering elegance of a ballad like "For a Minute There," or a swinging country honky tonker like "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud, Loud Music)," Gosdin goes deep into each lyric, pulling from it every ounce of emotion and story and placing it firmly in the listener's mind. And then there's Gosdin's pumpin', bumpin' barroom strutter "Two Lonely Hearts (Out of Hand)," with its killer Vince Gill harmonies and Scruggs' stuttering Telecaster in the verses popping through the mix, making it nearly transcendent in its seeking of the pleasure principle. The set closes with the country gospel tune "What a Price I've Paid." There are stunning moments of flatpicking and Gosdin's voice soars through the lyrics backed by Gill and Beverly Gosdin; it is positively rousing. As usual, Gosdin turns in a winner. He is one of the greatest ever. ~ Thom Jurek
