"Whenever Whenever Whenever" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. For a brief moment in the mid-90s, Maxwell was his generation's Marvin Gaye. Alice Donut's final album, 1995's Pure Acid Park, is regarded by some as a crass sell-out attempt along the lines of the Butthole Surfers' Electriclarryland, or the Meat Puppets' Too High to Die. The argument does have some validity -- the album was, after all, produced by Martin Bisi shortly after he helped lead Soul Asylum to their belated commercial breakthrough by sanding down their rough edges and glossing up the sound -- but while there is undeniably some sanding and glossing evident here, as opposed to raw early albums like Bucketfulls of Sickness and Horror in an Otherwise Meaningless Life, that's still not saying much: This is still fairly raw and noisy. FELLOW WORKERS was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Though veteran folkie Utah Phillips is old enough to be DiFranco's grandfather, the two have much in common. They both believe in music as a tool for social change, practicing the art of folk music in the manner of politically motivated artists like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. The socialist tinge of the title is borne out in Phillips's decidedly leftist politics, and his young colleague echoes his sentiments. Most of FELLOW WORKERS features Phillips telling stories about the struggle of the working man against a capitalist overdog, over the percolating "folk-funk" of DiFranco and her band. Despite the inherent potential for didacticism in such a project, Phillips's warm humanism and DiFranco's unerring sense of rhythm make this an album whose pleasures are both aesthetic and ideological. Utah Phillips has crafted a fascinating show out of his life. In the course of seventy years he has labored as a dishwasher, archivist, printer, and warehouseman; soldiered in the Korean War; lived as a tramp (he is still a Grand Duke of Hoboes), and for the past 36 years made his way telling stories and singing songs. He has the wit, humor, bite, and intelligence of a Mark Twain or a Will Rogers, and behind his "Everyman" appearance is a consummate artist. Peppered with one-liners and offhand philosophical commentary, Utah's revealing stories, about such spirited American characters as Charley Goodnight, Mother Jones, and Idaho Blackie, tell our true history and connect us to American traditions that are genuinely ours.
