Engineer Little Johnny Fader is operating a computer bulletin board system with tour news and notes on Ely and other Austin Texas acts, as well as song lyrics. The number, which must be accessed by computer and modem, is 512-288-4458.

After being dropped from MCA and knocking around for awhile in the mid-1980s, country maverick Joe Ely returned in 1987 with LORD OF THE HIGHWAY, an album for the Hightone label. Ely had always flaunted the conventions of Nashville, and LORD OF THE HIGHWAY is even edgier and more roots rock-oriented than his earlier material. It's clear the artist had lost none of his spunk.

In addition to sounding energized and vital, Ely also comes through with some fine tunes, including the story-songs "Me and Billy the Kid" and "Letter to L.A.," which recounts Ely's conflicts with the music industry. Beautiful, low-key numbers like "Silver City" are offset by ferocious rockers like "Everyone Got Hammered." With its clear appeal to fans of both roots country and working-class rock, this is an album with staying power.

Jo Dee Messina's sophomore album might be called I'M ALRIGHT, but its real message is "I'm Alright...without you." In song after song on this mostly upbeat album, Jo Dee plays the Strong Woman role, whether she's telling unfaithful or non-committal lovers to beat it, or insisting on a relationship that's equal in every way. In the infectious "Bye Bye," she's driving away from her loser boyfriend, declaring that she's got "the rear view mirror torn off, I ain't never lookin' back." Elsewhere, she's ...

When Shania Twain's self-titled debut came out in 1993, it was impossible to predict the impact she would soon have, not only on country music but on the pop world as well. She hadn't yet hooked up with producer/hubby Mutt Lange, so there's less pop crossover material here than on her subsequent releases. Instead, mainstream country is the order of the day: romantic ballads colored by appropriately sorrowful-sounding steel guitar, and perky up-tempo numbers capable of inducing a line-dance at a moment's notice. Twain's emergence as a bared-navel sex symbol was still ...

Texas singer/songwriters tend to be a hardy breed, and Joe Ely is no exception; more than 25 years after he released his first album, the man remains a potent honky tonk poet following his own muse. Streets of Sin, his first studio set in five years, finds him paring back his sound much as he did on Letter to Laredo (though with a subtle but strong electric edge and a willingness to periodically up the tempo), for a collection of songs about people struggling along life's margins -- a family struggling to hold together a failing farm ("All That You Need"), a veteran carny drifting from show to show ("Carnival Bum"), a gambler desperate for a winning bet on a horse ("Run Little Pony"), and the people ...

Hidden Hits, Vol. 1
Hidden Hits, Vol. 1 CD  (2003)

Lord Of The Highway CD music

Hidden Beach Recordings' Hidden Hits, Vol. 1 is a sampler of unsigned artists assembled by Steve McKeever's custom label, which was put on the map by the success of hip-hop/rap/neo-soul artist Jill Scott. The selections are typical of the mix of African-American styles the label has promoted during its short life. Hidden Beach's company goal is to find ways to make rap and hip-hop acceptable to an older demographic (and thus more broadly popular) by infusing (or diluting) it with elements of soul and smooth jazz. It's a reasonable enough charter, but the compilation and release of Hidden Hits, Vol. 1 (no, none of them are actually hits) suggests that the company is hoping someone else -- radio, reviewers? -- will do its A&R work for it and help decide which of these unknown artists should be signed. Those who wish to take the bait are going to find that, not surprisingly, the compilers are better at identifying acceptable neo-soul performers like J.R. ("I Choose You") and even the French-language act 7Destinee7 ("C'Est Durs"), who tend to come later in the sequencing, than rappers, who are mostly placed up front. Performers such as Critically Acclaimed & Kev Brown ("Wallflower") and jaMal ("Oh No," "Playa") offer little in the way of originality. Hidden Beach is attempting to find a market niche in the overlap of different styles, and when the label succeeds, it does so with a singular artist such as Scott. But sometimes there isn't as much overlap as the company executives would like to believe. ~ William Ruhlmann Jamal/Carmen/Tori Almaze/Trek Life/Destinee 7/Kev Brown Liner Note Author: ...
