FAIR AND SQUARE is Jimmie Dale Gilmore's debut album, released in 1988 when Gilmore was 43. In the '70s, Gilmore had been a member of The Flatlanders, with fellow Texans Joe Ely and Butch Hancock. Ely also produced FAIR AND SQUARE, and these ten songs draw from Gilmore's cohorts as well as from a number of other Texan writers, including Townes Van Zandt. Musically, Gilmore takes a path similar to that of Gram Parsons, pointing the way towards the alternative country movement of the '90s. His fragile waver is highly controlled and makes for an incredibly emotive instrument.
Gilmore is a writer and singer of great taste, and his work has happily found a broader audience thanks to his three excellent Elektra albums, AFTER AWHILE, SPINNING AROUND THE SUN, and BRAVER NEWER WORLD. It is also worth noting that The Flatlanders' sole album, MORE A LEGEND THAN A BAND, appeared on CD in 1990 after being available only on 8-track tape since its release in 1971.

Fair And Square
$13.19 Digitally remastered by Dr. Toby Mountain at Northeastern Digital Recording, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.
Recorded in 1972, this album wasn't properly released until 1990 (it appeared briefly only on 8-track tape). As if the solidly honest folk and country grounding of this music weren't enough, the band also included Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock. By the late eighties all of their ...

| | Butch Hancock West Texas Waltzes & Dust Blown Tractor Tunes CD (1978)
Fair And Square
$12.49 While Sugar Hill released two fine collections of Butch Hancock's recordings in 1989 and 1993, they only scratched the surface of a rich mother lode of Americana music. Recorded in 1978, West Texas Waltzes represents the debut of a talented wordsmith whose folk tunes seem to sprout naturally from Western farmland. Stripped-down arrangements, featuring no more than an acoustic guitar and harmonica, underline the bare land and harsh winds of these songs. On "Dry Land Farm," Hancock evokes Woody Guthrie and early Dylan as he plumbs the depths of the history of the American farmer. "Where the West Winds...Have Blow'd" follows, developing the twin themes of a person's relationship to the land and responsibility to it. The West Texas land is hard and unforgiving as "Dirt Road Song" notes, but the rewards, as in "They Say It's ...
| | Jimmie Dale Gilmore Spinning Around The Sun CD (1993)
Fair And Square
$7.59 From the riveting opening of "Where You Going," the listener is acutely aware that SPINNING AROUND THE SUN is a unique recording experience...and that's before Jimmie Dale's initial vocal appearence! This Austin singer/songwriter has an impossibly plaintive cry, complete with a thick Texas twang. Sounding and writing like a cross between Townes Van Zandt and Willie Nelson, Gilmore comes through as a pure original. There's a bluesy edge to his progressive country/folk sound which is reminiscent of ...

| | Chris Knight CD (1998)
Fair And Square
$7.79 With Chris Knight's debut album, released on MCA Nashville's sister label Decca, critics of the new country sound of the late '90s began to hold out hope that Nashville could return to the genuineness that it had been so lacking for years. That hope was rooted partly in Knight's singing, full of country-rock phrasing clearly modeled after Knight's hero, Steve Earle, but even more so in Knight's songwriting. His flair for describing the lower-middle class in Middle America, their difficulties making a living, and run-ins with the law, evokes Earle and even early Bruce Springsteen. For example, "Love and a .45," co-written with Fred Eaglesmith, describes how two lonely people on opposite sides of the law, a cop and a prostitute, find each other. One of Knight's most literate songs, "The River's Own," details ...
