Purchase Blues CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Susan Tedeschi Back To The River CD (2008)
Blues album
$11.99 While its predecessor, 2005's HOPE AND DESIRE, found blues-rocker Susan Tedeschi getting on a soul train, BACK TO THE RIVER represents that phrase beloved by hardcore fans of any artist, "a return to form." Tedeschi is back to the hard-hitting, bluesy sound with which she made her name, and her joy at this stylistic homecoming is clearly audible; you can hear it both in the throaty abandon of her vocals and in the unfettered fury with which she digs into her guitar solos. While there's still a soul flavor present in some of the tracks here, it takes a back seat to the visceral, string-bending, blues-belting sound that will forever be identified as Tedeschi's true trademark.
Personnel: Susan Tedeschi (vocals, guitars, background vocals); Matt Slocum (piano, keyboards); Ted Pecchio (bass guitar); Tyler Greenwell (drums, percussion); Dave Yoke.
Additional personnel: Derek Trucks (guitars, slide guitar); Doyle Bramhall II, Gary Louris (guitars, background vocals); Josh Stewart, Brendan O'Brien (guitars); Kyle Newmaster, Jamie Hovorka (trumpet); Jeremy Levy (trombone); Robert Walter (keyboards); George Drakoulias (percussion, background vocals); Julia Waters, Maxine Willard Waters (background vocals); Robert Hardt, Alex Budman.
| | Isaac Hayes Shaft (Deluxe Edition) CD (1971) SDTK
Blues CD music
$9.25 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically gritty observations on street life, over bleak, minor chords and busy percussion. T.I.P. featuring Beanie Sigel offers "2 Glock 9's," one of the soundtrack's most rugged grooves, a minimal, stripped-down drum break that stutters and skids backwards and forwards over a Notorious BIG vocal sample and is easily the eeriest track on the album. The only light relief is provided by Too $hort's "Pimp Sh*t," a humorous foray into playa politics.
The title track's perennially recognizable hi-hat and wah-wah guitar intro, interlocking horn/string parts, and smooth, proto-rap verses conjure the name SHAFT as surely as a snake-charmer's incantation. It also conjures the name of Isaac Hayes--the songwriter, arranger, musician, and producer responsible for the phenomenally successful soundtrack to the landmark 1971 Blaxploitation film. Hayes's status as a key player in the Stax/Volt soul empire, and as a solo artist of considerable renown, went
Of the many wonderful blaxpoitation soundtracks to emerge during the early '70s, Shaft certainly deserves mention as not only one of the most lasting but also one of the most successful. Isaac Hayes was undoubtedly one of the era's most accomplishe

| | Hound Dog Taylor & The Houserockers CD (1971)
Blues album
$14.49 Hound Dog Taylor & The Houserockers: Hound Dog Taylor, Brewer Phillips (guitar); Ted Harvey (drums).
A talent so mighty and so criminally overlooked that Bruce Iglauer started Chicago's Alligator Records just to put out his debut full-length, Theodore Roosevelt "Hound Dog" Taylor may be as important to blues and roots postmodernists as Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters were to the classic blues rockers. With a heavily distorted, highly amplified electric sound that eschewed the standard time-keeping of a bassist for the more propulsive chug of a rhythm guitar player, Taylor and his Houserockers brought the grimy juke-joint boogie back to the fore with this 1973 release. Influenced by Elmore James' loud and hard slide-guitar attack (James' standard "It Hurts Me Too" is given a rather fierce reading) and Freddy King's sweet melodicism, Taylor specialized in good-time dance-floor burners at a time when Chicago blues were sliding into a state of overblown reverence. Most of Taylor's originals are rocked-up party calls, greatly served by the minimal recording production they are given (it is a great lo-fi blues prototype for much of Fat Possum's work in the '90s). And while they may never be as lauded as the anthems of a John Lee Hooker or a Howlin' Wolf, chances are that purists are far more likely to boogie to 'em.
Recorded at Sound Studios, Chicago, Illinois. Includes liner notes by Wesley Race and Bruce Iglauer.
Producers: Hound Dog Taylor, Bruce Iglauer, Wesley Race.
| | Allen Toussaint The Bright Mississippi CD (2009)
Blues CD music
$15.65 Fans of legendary New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint may at first be surprised that, for his first album in over a decade, the producer, songwriter, and pianist would choose to forgo recording his own stellar material in favor of a collection of cover tunes. The songs here aren't just any songs, however, but a rich selection of Big Easy standards, as interpreted by one of the city's most gifted musical sons. The resulting Joe Henry-produced gumbo draws upon all of Toussaint's myriad musical experiences, but often focuses on his incredibly soulful piano playing. Even when other instruments take the lead (the trumpet on "A Dear Old Southland," the clarinet on "Just a Closer Walk With Thee") it's the master's sublimely sensitive ivory tickling that stands out. Recorded live in the studio with minimal instrumentation, the album captures Allen Toussaint at his most comfortable and intimate.
Liner Note Author: Joe Henry.
Recording information: 03/19/2008-03/22/2008.
Photographer: Michael "Mick" Wilson.
Personnel: Allen Toussaint (vocals, piano); Marc Ribot (acoustic guitar); Don Byron (clarinet); Joshua Redman (tenor saxophone); Nicholas Payton (trumpet); Brad Mehldau (piano); David Piltch (upright bass); Jay Bellerose (drums, percussion).

| | Songs 4 Worship: Shout To The Lord CDs (2001)
Blues music CDs
$17.05 SHOUT TO THE LORD offers the listener two discs' worth of live worship music. Utilizing funky, chattering rhythm guitars, syncopated percussion, contemporary-sounding synthesizer textures, and R&B-inflected vocals, this album adds a very modern tinge to the brand of spiritual songs presented. From the forceful, dance-oriented opening song "People Just Like Us," complete with greasy sax break, to the melodic, acoustic-guitar-laced ballad "The Great Southland," SHOUT TO THE LORD features solidly faith-based messages of belief and dedication, framed by some very secular-sounding arrangements. Those who made previous Hosanna/Hillsong releases million-sellers are sure to rejoice in the arrival of another batch of flawlessly presented gospel-pop tunes
