Dave Alvin's second release is a bit more relaxed and confident than his debut (ROMEO'S ESCAPE). He still sings about heartbreak, loneliness and the small sad dramas of the working class with the vision of a short story writer (an actual interest which bore fruit in his 1996 book of prose and poetry, Any Rough Times Are Now Behind You). Besides the compelling title song, this set also marks the first appearance of "Guilty Man" (later to become the name of his touring band) and his version of "Haley's Comet," co-written with Tom Russell, who also recorded this tale of Bill Haley's sad decline and death. From the balladry of "Why Did She Stay With Him" and "Dry River" to the roadhouse pummel of "Wanda And Duane," this album breathes with palpable emotion, but is also not afraid to rock hard.

Blue BLVD. album
$14.65 Lyrics translated from the Spanish by Guillermo Hernandaz, Yolanda Zepeda and Jaime Nicolopulos.
Following on from his father Santiago Jimenez' own successful run as a conjunto musician in San Antonio, Flaco Jimenez put together a conjunto of his own in the '50s, eventually becoming one of the most famous figures in Tex-Mex music (also known as Musica Nortena in Mexico). Based on the polkas and waltzes Mexican performers refashioned as rancheras, the Tex-Mex conjunto style features accordion, the 12-string bajo sexto guitar, bass, and drums. Flaco immediately staked his claim in the music with a distinctly imaginative and ...

Blue BLVD. CD music
$11.19 Dave Alvin's third album documents his continued growth as a gifted songwriter (the evidence of which can be heard in his first band, The Blasters) and the development of his skill as a vocalist of increasing breadth and nuance. His tales of working class struggles are always rich with dignity, and grace pervades even the most downtrodden circumstances. The gritty reality of ...
| | Dave Alvin King Of California CD (1994)
Blue BLVD. music CDs
$11.99 For his fourth album, 1994's KING OF CALIFORNIA, Dave Alvin mixed new songs with selections revisited from his back catalog, as well as numbers first recorded with his previous band, The Blasters. The setting is a pared-down acoustic ensemble perfectly suited to his songs of the downtrodden, the lovelorn and the lost--all tempered with a sense of hope. The title track is a perfect example of Alvin's finely crafted tales of the working class dreaming of sunnier climes. Bobby Lloyd ...
| | Phil Alvin County Fair 2000 CD (1994)
Blue BLVD. songs
$10.69 Brothers Phil and Dave Alvin were the heart of California roots-rockers the Blasters. After songwriter/guitarist Dave's departure for a solo career, Phil kept the group alive, but mostly on a local performance level, not as a recording unit. He released his first solo album in 1986, but it took him eight years to make another.
Like its predecessor, COUNTY FAIR finds Phil Alvin backed by a shifting ...

Blue BLVD. album
$26.49 TOTALE'S TURN (IT'S NOW OR NEVER), the 1980 live album from The Fall, features energetic concert recordings including "Fiery Jack" and "In My Area."
This rerelease contains four exclusive bonus cuts--"Container Drivers" (BBC Peel Session), "Jawbone & The Air-riffle" (BBC Peel Session), "New Puritan" (BBC Peel Session), and "New Face In Hell" (BBC Peel Session).
The first of what would be a veritable flock of live albums, some legit and some hovering on the edge of it, Totale's Turns, with the same lineup as Dragnet, found the Fall in a hilariously aggressive mood, as the statement of purpose "Intro" demonstrates. "The difference between you and us is that we have brains!" proclaims Smith, and from there it's off into their version of rock & roll hell. Song choices range over the first two albums and various singles, delivered with the at-once on form and shambling elan that characterized the band's rough and ready early days. The Riley/Scanlon guitar team performs their own brand of anti-guitar hero guitar heroics, scratchy, twanging, cutting, kicking into rave-up energy more often than not. The Leigh/Hanley rhythm section matches it all quite well, leaving Smith to be the howling, sneering, gurgling, and perfectly charismatic center of attention. There aren't as many one-off side comments as might be thought, but at one point he does note to the audience that "last orders are at half past ten." Some brilliant performances are ...
