A talented guitarist/singer/songwriter and producer, Buddy Miller merges a love for classic country, with a rock & roll sense of urgency and do-it-yourself ethic. Witness the fact that a good share of this record was recorded in Miller's living room. The results, however, are memorable -- not low-budget. Miller enlists some great vocal support from longtime duo partner Jim Lauderdale, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, and Dan Penn. His wife, Julie Miller, also provides moving harmonies, particularly on a stunning cover of the Louvin Brothers' classic "You're Running Wild," as well as sharing writing credits with her husband on a good share of the songs. She solely authored two of the album's strongest tracks, the haunting "Don't Listen to the Wind" and the tender ballad "Through the Eyes of a Broken Heart." And although it's been largely overlooked, Miller arguably turns in the finest version of Tom T. Hall's lonesome "That's How I Got to Memphis" since the original. ~ Jack Leaver

Entertainment Weekly (7/21/95, p.65) - "...writes homespun music with one ear to Hank Sr., another to the Louvin Brothers, and an eye to the progressive highway..." - Rating: B+ Dirty Linen (2-3/96, p.83) - "...There isn't a single dud among the 13 tracks...which stands as a testament that the no-frills production, great songwriting and emotional delivery that were the foundations of country music can still be found in the 90's if one knows where to look." Your Love & Other Lies
$14.09 Singer and songwriter Kacey Jones has built a strong reputation as a musical comedian, first as a member of the group Ethel & the Shameless Hussies and more recently as a solo act, recording albums of silly ditties such as Never Wear Panties to a Party and Every Man I Love Is Either Married, Gay or Dead. However, Jones offers a look at the more serious side of her musical personality with Kacey Jones Sings Mickey Newbury, in which she covers 15 songs by the legendary Nashville songwriter. Like his friend and colleague Kris Kristofferson, Mickey Newbury brought an intelligence, lyricism, and depth to Nashville songwriting that still held firm ties to the warmth and direct emotion of the best country music when he first appeared in the mid-'60s; Newbury also befriended Kacey Jones early in her career, and these performances reveal a deep love for Newbury's writing, and a keen appreciation of the emotional stakes of these songs. For someone best known for delivering musical punchlines, Jones fares well on this set; her rich voice suggests ...
