Admittedly, it's strange that an old school-sounding punk trio would criticize punk scene denizens thusly: "Covered in leather, or plaid patches, or metal studs/Your hair is dyed or spiked with glue/You only talk to those who look and act the way you do/You scoff at how the cops treat you/But they're no worse than dicks like you!" ("Punk by the Book"). It's even more strange in light of Anti-Flag's Discharge/Rancid haircuts, a dog collar, and even a shirt that says "destroy." But since they point out that what you think is more important than how you dress, fair enough, because they carry on a more crucial custom: warning MTV-polluted, 85-TV-channel youth that punk means doing something productive instead of being passive or getting drunk and into fights, and becoming aware of politics and history is a prerequisite before bitching about the government (such as the Pentagon's attempts to pretend there is no Gulf War syndrome, as Anti-Flag points out). Criticism from within is the only kind that's listened to. As well, on songs such as "Safe Tonight" and "Police State in the U.S.A.," Anti-Flag tosses up the kind of vintage, early-'80s, So-Cal, melodic punk that B.Y.O., Frontier, Posh Boy, and other labels specialized in, and a ska song is welcome. ~ Jack Rabid

Great Punk This is by far Anti-flag 's best album. One of the only true punk bands around this album and their others are what punk is about. The difference with Die for The Government is that it isn't as main stream as anti-flag's other records. Great band I hope you get through to Congress. Die For The Government album
$28.75 Based in the Grand Rapids, MI, metro area, Fenton Records was not a unique phenomenon. Like many other small regional labels in the '60s, Fenton would record any band able to cough up enough cash for a single that might be little more than a vanity pressing designed to be handed out to friends and family, given to radio, or perhaps sold at gigs. Some of these labels were little more than traps for bands; others wound up cutting some blistering rock & roll. Fenton falls into the latter camp, as its head honcho, Dave Kalmbach, was a blend of musician and mogul who wanted Fenton to be a place where local groups got the chance to see what it felt like to act like a real band by laying down tracks in a studio. Although the label never broke out of Michigan -- likely never making waves outside of western Michigan, to be honest -- there is a peculiar purity to the 45s Fenton rapidly released in the '60s, as they preserve a whole gaggle of bands that were bashing out three chords for the love of the music with little hope of hitting the big time. As such, the double-disc/triple-LP set Scream Loud!! The Fenton Story -- a collection of these rare, collector-cherished 45s assembled by those very same collectors -- almost functions as a piece of regional folk art, capturing bands from Grand Rapids, Holland, Lansing, Muskegon, and elsewhere in western Michigan and thereby offering a specific portrait of a place, or perhaps more specifically a time. Western Michigan wasn't that dissimilar from other areas of the U.S. in the '60s, as there were garage bands everywhere from California to Connecticut, and they had the same influences as everybody else, but as they had no scene or sound to call their own -- or even future superstars, as only guitarist Danny Gatton cut early ...

$9.89 Hello, I'm Cool John Ferguson. I was born in December 1953 on St. Helena's Island, one of the Sea Islands of South Carolina. I've been playing the guitar since I was three. When I turned five, I started gigging in the Pentecostal church of my family. You can hear some of that gospel flavor in my playing, a lot of traditional African music mixed with the field and spiritual music. A lot of my people came out of the Gullah tradition, with roots in Western Africa, hard work and a hard life on the plantations, and worship in praise houses. I was featured entertainer for Lowcountry Sing on Channel 5, Charleston SC, for three years, appearing with the Ferguson Sisters, an outstanding gospel trio.Music for me has always been a way to give praise for life and its gifts, but it has also been a way to celebrate with my friends, fellow musicians and excited audiences. When I play a show, I try to capture the spirit of the room and give some of that spirit back to everyone, amplified and transformed into something pure and beautiful.I learned to play naturally, hearing gospel or music on the radio and tv and records that my parents and sisters had around the house. I'd learn everything I could get my hands on, it didn't matter where the music came from, I just learned it all - tv themes, blues, R&B, jazz, gospel - it all came in my ears and out through my hands. It used to be hard to play anything but gospel music. My parents thought music should only be used to praise God, and that's true, but all the music I played was praise. In the late '60s, Earl Davis moved to Beaufort, SC. He was the chorus and band director at Beaufort High School. He had come out of the Army band at the same time Wayne Shorter was doing his service. Earl had an R&B band and, whenever I could, we'd play gigs at juke joints, military clubs, Elks and VFW clubs, really anywhere we could.I’ve been active on tent revival circuits, played with LaFace Records of Atlanta, GA, and collaborated with several well-known artists including Taj Mahal, Kenny Wayne Shepard, BB King, the Stylistics, Beverly Guitar Watkins, Captain ...
