Arising from obscurity, 33-year-old Virginia Rodrigues, who grew up outside of Salvador, Brazil, was introduced to the recording world by Brazil's popular singer Caetano Veloso. Sol Negro is an incredible album that mixes the vocal talents of Rodrigues and percussive rhythms of her native Brazil. To describe this recording as heavenly or hymn-like wouldn't be too far-fetched; the album's rhythms work in tandem to cradle Rodrigues' celestial voice. On the a cappella track "Verônica," she demonstrates her youthful, almost childlike vocals. With just as much ease as she sings a cappella, she can shift her vocal talents to a moving samba on "Adeus, Batucada." Appearances by Brazilian singer Milton Nascimento on "Sol Negro" and guitarist Gilberto Gil on "Terra Seca" showcase Brazil's wealth of musical talent. Rodrigues' first major recording succeeds in juxtaposing her ability to carry both lilting Brazilian rhythms and slow harmonious melodies. Undoubtedly her late entrance into the recording world will be marked by a fruitful career. ~ Cliff Samaniego

Sol Negro album
$10.59 As the title suggests, Cubanismo's third album is a reincarnation of sorts, with several new band members and an even greater variety of musical stylings explored. One thing that hasn't changed is the almost tangible intensity and excitement that Jesus Alemany and company bring to every song, whether a traditional Cuban number originally performed a half century ago or a new composition. This album is slightly more subdued than ...
| | Virginia Rodrigues Nos CD (2000)
Sol Negro CD music
$14.29 Strongly informed by Rodrigues' allegiance to the Condomble religion, a Yoruban/African-derived faith with similarities to Haiti's Santeria cult, Nos finds the Brazilian singer once again weaving her powerfully spiritual voice through a supple backdrop of Bahian rhythms and tropicalismo flourishes. The disc appropriately begins with a song to Exu -- the Condomble goddess who enables communion with the high deities -- with Rodrigues' operatic voice ideally set off by a percussion-only backdrop. What follows is a varied and stunning dance with ...

Guitarist Marc Ribot is well-known and respected for his session work with the likes of Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, as well as his association with John Zorn and other downtown New York experimental musicians. Like several others in that scene, Ribot has formed a group to create an outlet for an interest in ethnic music, in this case, the music of the late Cuban composer, ...

Sol Negro CD music
$15.45 Fairport's 1997 studio effort WHO KNOWS WHERE THE TIME GOES? commenced with the rollicking "John Gaudie," written and sung by newcomer Chris Leslie. Many a fan must have sighed with relief and thought that, for the first time since the group originally disbanded in 1979, Fairport had an in-house songwriter of substance. Almost as importantly, here was someone to share vocal duties with Simon Nicol. THE WOOD AND THE WIRE boasts nine songs penned by Leslie alone or with Nigel Stonier, three in-house compositions or arrangements, plus two outside efforts including the stirring finale "Rocky Road" from the ever-reliable Steve Tilston.
This is also the first studio album to feature drummer ...
