This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
This is part of Groove Note's Concord Jazz SACD reissue series.
Ray Brown is, of course, one of jazz's greatest bassists--amazing technique, rock-steady, tasteful; he's played with darn near everyone (Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker, Elvis Costello), and was married to Ella Fitzgerald. On SOULAR ENERGY, he steps out on his own and generates some relaxed yet swinging (of course!) mainstream jazz (almost all tunes are familiar standards), featuring the soul-jazz piano stylings of Gene Harris, the bluesy big-toned sax of Red Holloway, and the clean, Wes-and-Grant-style guitar of Emily Remler.
Recorded at Coast Recorders, San Francisco, California in August 1984.

| | Pee Wee Russell Jazz Reunion CD (1961)
Soular Energy
$9.65 This LP (whose contents have been reissued on CD) features a reunion between tenor-saxophonist Coleman Hawkins and clarinetist Pee Wee Russell; they revisit "If I Could Be with You," a song they had recorded together in a classic version back in 1929. Russell was beginning to perform much more modern material than the Dixieland music associated with the Eddie Condon players and on this set (which also features trumpeter Emmett Berry, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, pianist Nat Pierce, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Jo Jones), he plays a couple of Duke Ellington tunes, two originals ...
| | Whitesnake Starkers In Tokyo CD (1998) (Import) Germany; United Kingdom
Soular Energy
$7.55 STARKERS IN TOKYO captures Whitesnake, live in concert in Japan.
Whitesnake's grip on the U.S. record-buying public may have lessened considerably by the late '90s, but in other parts of the world (especially Japan), David Coverdale and company still reigned supreme. Keeping in step with the unplugged craze of the decade, Coverdale and longtime guitarist Adrian Vandenberg united for such a performance in the land of the rising sun, resulting in the release of 1998's Starkers in Tokyo. Anyone ...
| | Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges CD (1960) Remastered; Digipak
Soular Energy
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner note writer Nat Hentoff's assertions) to reach their final form. Mulligan contributed the gorgeous ballad "What's the Rush" (where he sat back to enjoy ...

| | Bola Sete Tour De Force CD (1964)
Soular Energy
$9.59 TOUR DE FORCE contains 2 LPs on 1 CD: BOSSA NOVA (1962)/TOUR DE FORCE (1963).
Sete led a trio on this mid-1963 date, backed by Fred Schrieber on bass and John Rae on drums. It tilts a little to the mellower, more sentimental side than more driving sessions such as the one he did the previous year for Bossa Nova. It's still quality by-the-fire jazz bossa nova music, Sete's playing a lesson in both skill and discreet economy. While he wrote three of the ten songs, his repertoire of cover selections is fairly wide ranging, taking in "Moon River," Dizzy Gillespie's "Tour de Force," and, as a special highlight, his version of Isaac ...
