For Live at Maybeck Recital Hall, Vol. 16, Concord persuaded a reigning giant of the piano to record at Maybeck's Yamaha keyboard -- and the result is one of the most musical, and certainly one of the most enjoyable, concerts in the whole series. Recorded closely enough so that you can hear him grunting along with the music, Hank Jones gives full vent to his melodic gifts in a brace of pop and jazz standards from several decades, never staying on any of them for more than five minutes, and rarely falling back on the usual pianistic bop patterns. Starting out with very attractive stride work on "I'll Guess I Have to Change My Plan" and "It's the Talk of the Town," he always chooses his notes with care while rarely losing touch with the pulse of jazz, which is all too tempting in a solo format. Among the more touching moments are the treatments of "I Cover the Waterfront" and "Memories of You"; "Blue Monk" and Joe Bushkin's "Oh, Look at Me Now" have the most wit. ~ Richard S. Ginell
Recorded live at Maybeck Recital Hall, Berkeley, California.

Live At Maybeck Recital Hall, Vol. 16 songs
$31.39 "Walkin'" is taken at the kind of jaunty tempo that distinguished the Wynton Kelly-Paul Chambers-Jimmy Cobb rhythm axis. Paul Chambers' buoyant, effortless beat, his sure sense of harmony and swing, and his resounding brand of melodic bass (dig his little bowed break at the conclusion of "Walkin'") are the glue which hold these performances together. On "Walkin'" he and Jimmy Cobb lock up the groove as if swinging were the same as breathing, allowing Kelly to engage the trumpeter in a continual dialogue, feinting counterpoint and feeding him his favorite chords, then dropping away to allow Miles to stroll for a taste.
Kelly's joy is infectious on the band's old warhorse "Bye Bye Blackbird" and the easy-going ballad "All Of You," where he seems to particularly inspire ...

| | Very Best Of Anthony Newley CD (1997)
Live At Maybeck Recital Hall, Vol. 16 CD music
$9.79 Spectrum Music, the British discount-priced reissue imprint of PolyGram, presents a 20-track condensation of Anthony Newley's recordings for Decca Records between 1959 and 1965 on The Very Best of Anthony Newley. Newley's career as a pop star came as something of a surprise following his success as a stage and film actor. It grew out of his portrayal of the Elvis Presley-like rock star Jeep Jackson in the film Idle on Parade; his first hit, "I've Waited So Long," was a song he sang in the picture. That tune turns up toward the end of the disc, but up front, skipping over the "Idle on Parade" EP, the album's first 11 tracks chronicle, in order, the rest of Newley's U.K. singles chart entries through 1962, starting with his Top Ten cover of Lloyd Price's "Personality." The rest include pop tunes like Lionel Bart's "Do You Mind?" (covered for the American market by Andy Williams), romantic ballads, and novelty songs like "Pop Goes the Weasel" that allowed Newley to show off his Cockney charm. By the ninth ...
