Recording information: Sound On Sound Recording, Inc., New York, NY (01/1993). Illustrator: Sylvia Rogers. Unknown Contributor Roles: Chris Potter ; Glenn Davis ; Gary Mazzaroppi. Accompanied by a small, dexterous combo, the veteran jazz pianist shows both technique and versatility in selection of originals and standards, including the Lennon/McCartney title track and an uptempo version of the classic ballad "Moon and Sand." Pianist Marian McPartland displays her versatility throughout this reflective and generally thoughtful CD on such selections as the Beatles' "In My Life," John Coltrane's "Red Planet," Ivan Lins' "Velas," and Ornette Coleman's "Ramblin'." Despite the diverse repertoire, McPartland's own flexible style shines through and her individual musical personality is felt in each song. Altoist Chris Potter makes the trio a quartet on half of the selections and he uplifts the session a bit. McPartland's closing wistful solo piano version of "Singin' the Blues" (dedicated to her late husband, cornetist Jimmy McPartland) should not be missed. ~ Scott Yanow Marian McPartland In My Life Songs | 1. | Grooveyard | |

In My Life
$9.65 Personnel: Marian McPartland (piano). Recorded live at Maybeck Recital Hall, Berkeley, California. Personnel: Marian McPartland (piano). Liner Note Author: Leslie Gourse. Recording information: Maybeck Recital Hall, Berkeley, CA (01/20/1991). Photographer: James Gudeman. Marian McPartland has become a jazz legend over several decades and this captivating solo concert has something for everyone. Whether it's her jaunty opener "This Time the Dream's On Me," the deliberate somber take of "Willow Weep for Me," or her thunderous performance of her "Theme From Piano Jazz" (usually heard only as an incomplete snippet on her long-running NPR series), her chops are never in question. A highlight is Duke Ellington's "Clothed Woman," a piece rarely ...

Audio Mixers: Doug Epstein; Arthur Blythe; Bob Thiele. Liner Note Author: Stanley Crouch. Recording information: Mediasound Studios, NY. Photographer: Jim Houghton. Given the urban title of alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe's debut Columbia album, it's quite a shock when he and his red-hot band of collaborators that include James Blood Ulmer on guitar, Bob Stewart on tuba, flutist James Newton, bassist Cecil McBee, and Jack DeJohnette open with the decidedly ...
| | Warren Vache 2gether CD (2001) (Import) Germany
In My Life
$20.39 Personnel includes: Warren Vache (trumpet, cornet); Bill Charlap (piano). Recorded on December 13 & 14, 2000. Includes liner notes by Frank Nagel-Heyer. This studio session featuring the duo of cornetist/fluegelhornist Warren Vache and pianist Bill Charlap deserves to rank alongside nearly any similar date recorded during the last two decades of the 20th century. Vache has been overlooked by far too many critics (which even Wynton Marsalis acknowledged in print); while Charlap has had a little easier time with the exposure he has received as a member of the Phil Woods Quintet and recording as a leader for Blue Note. Vache's lyricism come through, whether utilizing a mute, ...

In My Life
$12.89 jazz guitar duos have a long tradition; Joe Pass/Herb Ellis, George Barnes/Carl Kress, and now Kenny Poole/Gene Bertoncini - they don't break any new ground, but they don't try to; it's just simply great, unpretentious jazz, masterfully played & beautifu
Engineers: Bill Gwynne, Greg Lee, Bob Rowlette. Personnel: Kenny Poole (guitar); Gene Bertoncini (guitar); Bob Bodley (acoustic bass). Audio Mixer: Greg Lee. Recording information: Stork Music Productions (12/1997-01/1998). Photographer: Ann Segal. New Yorker Bertoncini and Cincinnatian Poole have contrasting styles on acoustic nylon string guitars: the former is more classic and classical, while the latter is a bit more swing-oriented. Together they are perfectly in tune with one another's notions and inclinations, playing these 12 standards faithfully and with tender loving care. Acoustic bassist Bob Bodley joins them for several cuts, but is mixed well in the background, unobtrusive and quiet, as the guitarists weave their ...

In My Life
$12.95 Danish trio Who Made Who move along the post-punk revival continuum from approximately 1979 (all those recent bands who sound more than a little like early Gang of Four) to approximately 1981: the stiff angularity of the initial post-punk scene is softened into a disco-fied, synthed-out take on dance music, sometimes turning into a full-on kind of brittle white-boy funk. Think of A Certain Ratio, certain elements of early Thompson Twins and Duran Duran, the Au Pairs' Sense and Sensuality, and -- yes -- Songs of the Free-era Gang of Four, and you're about 80 percent of the way to Who Made Who. That extra 20 percent is all-important, however: rather than shamelessly mimicking this era of pop music à la the Rapture and !!!, Who Made Who use it ...
