The Gene Harris Quartet was quite consistent in its many Concord recordings of the 1990s. The group on this disc (pianist Harris, guitarist Ron Eschete, bassist Luther Hughes, and drummer Paul Humphrey) performs soulful and bluesy versions of such songs as "I Remember You," "The Brotherhood of Man," Lee Morgan's "The Sidewinder," and even "September Song." All of Harris' records from this era are easily recommended to fans of soul-jazz, soulful hard bop, and blues-oriented jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

$7.59 Something a bit different for Marsalis brother Wynton: an all-standards and ballads album. This record is a tribute of sorts to the songs that jazzmen throughout history have interpreted with reverence and the twist of personal expression. The program consists of many classic Broadway and Tin Pan Alley tunes--many ...

| | Asetha Power Child Of Rhyme CD (2008)
Brotherhood music CDs
$20.89 On her debut album, âChild of Rhymeâ, Asetha Power delivers beautifully original folk songs. This album - steeped in carefully crafted lyrics, playful melodies, and soul-stitched vocals - is filled with east coast wisdom. There is something very special here; a child-like charm that is grounded and bold. Asetha's voice, songs and soul are wrought with grit and spun with gold. Since her 2006 FACTORâfunded demo, Asetha has worked with Jason LaPrade - producer, engineer and musician (dobro, lap steel, acoustic and electric guitar, banjo) - to capture her original songs. LaPrade exquisitely fashioned each song with the help of Murray Foster (Great Big Sea, Moxy FrĂŒvous) on bass, Adam Warner (White Cowbell Oklahoma) on percussion, Rosemary Phelan with harmony and Tessa Lewis on fiddle. On this album, Asetha includes songs that celebrate love, in all its forms. âPixieâ tells the tale of drunken lovers waltzing carelessly through life together, in 3/4 time, of course. In âWalk Onâ, Asetha deftly describes an older man she calls Minx, his philosophies on life, and their adoration for one another. âLine by Lineâ mimics the madness of misguided fancies. And âEase Back Little Horsieâ â which she calls her âlittle dittyâ â is a bit of a pep talk about slowing life down. Using lyrical narratives, Asetha also delves into darker themes of human suffering, while maintaining a message of hope and resilience. âSally Never Criesâ is about a mother finding the courage to flee an abusive relationship with her young children. âAngels Count the Bedsâ talks about the circumstances and government policies that tragically impact individuals, creating poverty. And honours the people that work at community agencies, helping those in dire need. There is a personal approach and depth to Asethaâs songwriting that captures the imagination of listeners. The charm of the east coast is quietly evident in lyrics such as âJackson, I tell him, you were high on Jam Jams when you took my handâ and âBronze the happy years; Mother singing Sonnyâs Dreamâ. Audiences are moved and enchanted by her easy style. Asetha, without a doubt, is a proud Newfoundlander and a distinctly spirited crafter and performer of songs.Asetha's talents have been fermenting, improving, and gaining acclaim - much like her dad's fine homebrew (not unlike Creemore with a hint of unripened gooseberry) - for many a year. Her abilities are bountiful as she also writes flowery bios of her fascinating self. :D Next, presented as âMyth or Factâ scenarios (for greater impact and interest), is a behind the scenes, up to the minute, 'meditation' on Asetha Power - the musician, singer, songwriter and Newfoundlander. 1. Asetha was an energetic, poised and driven child ⊠MYTH: Asetha did and still does suffer from âsleepy sicknessâ ...
