Stan Getz played the tenor saxophone with one of the smoothest tones ever produced. His improvisations always seemed to glide effortlessly over the rhythm section, and his use of space in his solos displayed endless musical maturity. Often, it seemed like Getz transcended soloing altogether, as he seamlessly moved from the tune's melody into his own musical ideas.

BLUE SKIES could not be a better representation of this quality. This 1982 recording begins with the gorgeous ballads "Spring Is Here" and "Antigny," then heats up midway through the record with pianist Jim McNeely's sprightly "There We Go." From here, the disc closes with more breathtaking ballad work on the title track and "How Long Has This Been Going On?" Lesser jazz musicians could never sustain an album of mostly atmospheric ballads, but Getz and company truly excel in this environment. A largely reflective release, this is one of the tenor player's finest later dates.

Recorded at Coast Recorders, San Francisco, California in January 1982. Includes liner notes by Steve Getz and Phil Elwood.

Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Jim McNeely (piano); Marc Johnson (bass); Billy Hart (drums).

Entertainment Weekly (12/1/95, p.77) - "...[the] work on this short (46 minutes) CD is uncommonly pure and [Getz's sidemen] keep the mood beautifully sustained." - Rating: B+
Down Beat (3/96, pp.42-43) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "...most of the playing here is slow and lyrical; the kind of music a musician can lay back in and fuss over when a note or chord strikes his fancy without feeling an aggressive tempo nipping at his heels....a master player at ease."

Music composed by Stephen Schwartz. Lyrics written by Stephen Schwartz. Beginning in 1971, the original production of Godspell ran for more than six years in New York, and long before it closed there were satellite companies performing the religious pop/rock show around the U.S. and throughout the world. In a sense, the musical never stopped running, since it continued to be performed regularly by professional and amateur companies in the ensuing decades. This 30th anniversary recording is unusual in that national touring companies are not typically graced with their own cast albums, but it gives a good idea of current interpretations of what is now a venerable show. Composer Stephen Schwartz gives his blessing in a sleeve note, which must mean that he is willing to accept responsibility for this updated version, though it is inferior to previous ones. The original score was written and arranged in a contemporary pop style, circa 1971, which meant that the ballads were reminiscent of the work of James Taylor and Carole King, and the up-tempo numbers rocked lightly, though the songs were carried by catchy melodies. Clearly, it was felt that the score needed to be updated, and musical director Alex Lacamoire has contributed what are called new orchestrations (though there's no orchestra, just a rock band) and arrangements. Lacamoire must have thought that Godspell didn't rock hard enough, since he has taken several of the songs into heavy metal territory, with wailing guitar solos. And he's not above borrowing from other rock operas -- "Prepare Ye" is now distinctly similar to "Pinball ...

Blue Skies
CD $9.79  Audio Samples
If Galaxie 500 had gotten together in Dunedin, New Zealand, instead of Cambridge, MA, they probably would have sounded something like Uncle Wiggly. This New York City trio's mix of scrappy indie pop, delicate and nearly psychedelic reveries, and tightly-wound instrumentals should, by all logic, be too unfocused and eclectic to really work; but it's these last two elements of ...

Five Americans Progressions CD  (1967)

Blue Skies

The Five Americans' third album, Progressions, lives up to its title. The group, which had gained success with the pounding frat rocker "I Saw the Light" and the bubbly pop hit "Western Union," began to show some real artistic growth as they stretched out and explored new sounds. Some of the tracks sound like more assured versions of their earlier efforts -- the bubblegummy "Zip Code" (the attempted follow-up to "Western Union"), the tender folk-rock of "(But Not) Today," the sparkling pop of "Stop-Light" -- but they also incorporate some harder guitar rock on "Black Is White -- Day Is Night," Kinks-y baroque pop psych on "Rain Maker," and blue-eyed soul on "Come on Up." They also ditched the at times too slick sound achieved by producer Dale Hawkins, took over the production chores themselves, and did a fine job of creating a full and rich sound with just enough experimentation to keep things unpredictable. Progressions is a substantial leap of quality for the group; with the right push, it could have been ...
