MAIDEN VOYAGE was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
On MAIDEN VOYAGE, jazz vocalist Freelon tackles an intriguing batch of tunes, all of whose lyrics (and many of whose music) were written by women. Stand outs are "Four Women" by Nina Simone, which provides revealing characterizations of four black women, and "Sepia Wing" - a lyric version of Marian McPartland's "Threnody," with lyrics by Freelon herself. An understanding of the feminine spirit is what Freelon seems to be striving for here. The contemporary jazz arrangements by Michael Abene give a fresh and unified feeling to many different styles and eras of song. As an added surprise, Herbie Hancock himself guests on piano on Freelon's version of his titular composition.
Recorded at Sound On Sound Studios, New York, New York on September 12 & 13 and October 6, 1997. Includes liner notes by Nnenna Freelon and Marian McPartland.

Maiden Voyage album
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Maiden Voyage CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Maiden Voyage music CDs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of ...
| | Marshall Tucker Band Where We All Belong CD (1974) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Maiden Voyage songs
$10.69 Originally released on Capricorn Records (0145). Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso.
Although it runs a little long, Where We All Belong captures the sound of The Marshall Tucker Band coming into its own. Half the tracks are new studio recordings, which are more focused than their previous releases; the other half is a harder-edged, jam-oriented live set. Taken together, they show that the band was progressing musically. ~ Stephen ...
