Tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton is something of a jazz anomaly. Young enough to be part of the generation of players influenced by John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Ornette Coleman, he draws his primary inspiration from an earlier generation of saxophonists. Don Byas, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins and, of course, Lester Young--the big-toned, warm, breathy tenor giants of the '30s and '40s--are the icons that fire Hamilton's approach. BALLAD ESSENTIALS is a superb cross-section of his work, recorded with various lineups for the Concord label between 1977 and 1995.
Unsurprisingly, the program is all standards, rendered with fabulous technique and delivered with genuine, unabashedly sentimental warmth. Hamilton's version of "Everything Happens To Me" could have melted the iceberg in TITANIC; his horn sings over a lush string section in an Alan Broadbent arrangement of "My Foolish Heart," and his transformation of Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight" stands with any recorded version. Also featured are the great trad/swing pianists John Bunch and Dave McKenna, and fellow tenor Ken Peplowski. Innovative? Not exactly. Timeless swing/jazz ballads played with breathtaking beauty? Absolutely.
Recorded between 1977 and 1995. Includes liner notes by Scott Yanow.

Ballad Essentials songs
$9.59 Scott Hamilton has never been an innovator, but he has certainly been consistent. "Groundbreaking" isn't a word you will ever hear in connection with the breathy tenor man, who has excelled by sticking with the type of 1940s-minded jazz that he's known for. Although recorded in 2000, Jazz Signatures never loses its swing-to-bop mindset. Joined by pianist John Bunch, bassist Dave Green, and drummer Steve Brown, Hamilton has one foot in small-group swing and the other in early bebop and, true to form, he is as expressive on medium-tempo and fast numbers (Billy Strayhorn's "Raincheck," Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz") as he is on ballads (Tadd Dameron's ...

| | Mike Mainieri An American Diary, Vol. 2: The Dreamings CD (1999)
Ballad Essentials CD music
$13.85 The Dreamings is the second volume of Mike Mainieri's An American Diary project. The vibraphonist and leader appears primarily with saxophonist George Garzone, bassist Marc Johnson, and drummer Peter Erskine. But thanks to the rotating cast of guest musicians, each track is a wholly new experience, distinguished by unexpected timbres and colors. Especially noteworthy are George Garzone's clarinet on "One Night in Paradise," Erik Friedlander's cello on "Planting Rice Is Never Fun," Simon Seven's didgeridoo on "The Dreamings," and Arto Tuncboyan's sazabo on "Dear, My Friend (The Gift)." Mainieri's goal was to explore his musical upbringing in an American immigrant family, as well as his later experiences as a traveling musician. His first American Diary record included music by composers as far apart as Aaron Copland and Frank Zappa. This diary entry has an even broader scope, including folk material from the Philippines ...
