Jazz Moods: Jazz At Day's End album
$11.99 This is a collection of Spanish and American songs by Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury and opera singer Montserrat Caballe.
With Barcelona, Queen singer Freddie Mercury realized his long-lived dream of performing with an opera singer; in this case, Montserrat Caballe. While it's certainly a treat for any fan of Mercury's to hear this album, it's a difficult record to recommend. Most fans of opera will probably find it far too simplistic and pop-based, while many rock fans are sure to find the record too classical. The first half of the album, however, is deserving of a spin for any open-minded listener. Consisting of semi-operatic melodies with grand production, songs like "Barcelona" and the Eastern-sounding "La Japonaise" are startling in their beauty; the two singers from opposite ends of the music spectrum working surprisingly well off each other. The most classically operatic pieces of the project, "Ensueno" and "The Fallen Priest," are alternately gorgeous and powerfully dramatic. Unfortunately, the second half of the album is less successful as it reverses the formula of the first half. While Mercury can do well in semi-operatic settings, Caballe sounds awkward ...

Jazz Moods: Jazz At Day's End songs
$7.95 A handy single-disc consolidation of the three-disc box set THE LOOK OF LOVE, THE VERY BEST OF BURT BACHARACH drops the rarities and oddities for a 16-track blast of nothing but the biggest hits, over a third of which are sung by Bacharach and Hal David's premier vocal partner, Dionne Warwick. Other singers include Gene Pitney, the Shirelles, Dusty Springfield, and Christopher Cross, all of them performing some of the finest songs of their careers. Best of all for the most easy-listening-averse fans--none of the songs come from Bacharach's ...
| | Best Tango Album In The World, Ever! CDs (2003)
Jazz Moods: Jazz At Day's End album
$17.15 The title of this television-advertised compilation may be arrogant, but then the tango is not a dance for the shy and retiring. Whether or not it is, as it claims, The Best Tango Album in the World, Ever!, the two-disc set, containing 30 tracks and running a little less than an hour and a half, does feature some major performers of the music, notably Carlos Gardel, renowned as the father of the tango, heard performing "Volver" and the concluding vocal version of "Mi Buenos Aires Querido," and Astor Piazzolla, who used the tango as a vehicle for composing modern classical music, heard performing "La Rayuela." Other notable performers include Carlos Garcia & His Orchestra, heard on four tracks, Sexteto Mayor, Florindo Sassone & His Traditional Orchestra, and Alfredo de Angelis & His Traditional Orchestra. (If the casual listener to whom this collection is intended recognizes the third track, "Por una Cabeza," ...

Jazz Moods: Jazz At Day's End music CDs
$24.49 While living in Europe, France, and Denmark, to be exact, Dexter Gordon made many recordings for the Steeplechase label, in studios and on trips to Switzerland and Sweden, performing with "local" rhythm sections and some American expatriates like himself. A regular partner for the tenor saxophonist in the early to mid-'70s was the quite able pianist Lars Sjösten, who was able to keep up with Gordon in terms of both musicianship and stamina. For these dates live in Sweden, Gordon really elongates five standards, two ballads, and two snippets of "The Theme" over a two-hour-plus double-CD set. Sjösten's ...
