$8.99 The members of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet may surprise you. Sure, they're four classically-trained guitarists who have known each other since college. And yes, they do play music from the standard guitar repertoire. However, what is extraordinary about them is that they are also composers, arrangers, and innovators. This is apparent as soon as the first notes of the opening track are heard. How refreshing it is to have a disc that is so engaging, diverse, educational, and just plain fun.
For the African-inspired "mbira," the guitar-guys put staples on strings to imitate the sound of the African thumb piano. "A furiosa" has them tapping their guitars and rubbing their fingers up and down the strings to create percussive effects associated with the Brazilian rhythms of the piece.
Some other departures from the norm: a suite of three Klezmer dances, featuring a guest stint by a Russian-born Klezmer scholar playing wild clarinet solos, and a phenomenal arrangement of Chick Correa's "Spain." This disc makes it easy for the listener to completely enjoy and appreciate; it is also easy to hear the joy the LAGQ most certainly feel when they are playing together.

Labyrinth / Los Angeles Guitar Quartet
$9.05 Acoustic guitar is used in traditional music around the world. The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet draws their inspiration from around the globe, performing Celtic, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban music along with original compositions drawing upon everything from reggae to Egyptian music and Homeric myths.
'Walk Dance' is based on a series of Macedonian dances with intricate time meters, usually 11/8 or 11/16. Woven through the Greek rhythms is a flamenco style, a delightful cross-cultural pollination. 'Ellis Island' is a similar experiment, taking rhythm patterns from India and expressing them in very Western ways. Originally written for a guitar orchestra, the composer transcribed it for the quartet. Traditional styles blended with irreverent innovation, such as the employ of cello bow, captures the spirit of the American melting pot.
At once experimental and very mainstream, these pieces show that guitar music does not necessarily have to be complex to be fascinating, and does not have to conform to overly simplified structures to cause instinctive enjoyment.

The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet is not your typical classical ensemble. The group's open-minded, category-defying aesthetic is shaped by the diverse influences of its individual members. GUITAR HEROES pays homage to the musicians who inspired the foursome, an eclectic pantheon that includes jazz icons, finger-picking wizards, and rock legends, as well as artists from the classical mainstream. The ensemble honors many of its idols via imaginative arrangements of their heroes' works, notably a Brazilian-flavored version of Ralph Towner's classic "Icarus," a "nuevo flamenco" take on Yes guitarist Steve Howe's "Mood for a Day," and a deft medley of "Blue Ocean Echo" and "Country Gentleman" that would make Chet Atkins proud.
Other six-string luminaries are celebrated through original compositions. Brian Head's "We Know You Know: Reverie for Mahavishnu" recalls John McLaughlin's groundbreaking fusion work with both Miles Davis and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Bryan Johanson conjures the flamboyant virtuosity of Jimi Hendrix with the atmospheric "Pluck, Strum, and Hammer," and shows deep appreciation for the uncompromising nature of Frank Zappa's music, as well as his humor, with "Let's Be Frank." The quartet acknowledges its enormous debt to the pioneering work of the Assad Duo and Los Romeros with a vibrant performance of Sergio Assad's "Uarekena" and a graceful reading of "El Boda de Luis Alonso: Intermezzo," a staple from the Romeros' repertoire.
