| | Chris Young Man I Want To Be CD (2009)
Copland Profile
$9.09 Since Chris Young appeared on the "Nashville Star" television program in 2006, he's been on a roll. After signing with RCA he had a hit with "Drinkin' Me Lonely," his first single from his self-titled debut recording. Likewise, the two singles that have preceded the release of THE MAN I WANT TO BE in 2009 haven't done too badly either, getting plenty of play on radio. While Chris Young's sound is firmly in the contemporary country camp, it's also a lot more hardcore honkytonk than it is the refried '70s rock clichés that plague the genre. Part of that is due to his big booming baritone voice that rings as clear as a bell in this mix. (Think George Strait-meets-Josh Turner.) The other part of his appeal is the use of a relatively small group of musicians, giving the disc a more organic sound than a lot of what's out there. Young also has a lot of respect for tradition: "Rose in Paradise" is drenched in fiddles, mandolins, and acoustic guitars. It's a country-styled blues and features no less than Willie Nelson as a duet partner. The final track on the set is ...

| | Vangelis Mythodea: Music For The Nasa Mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey CD (2001)
Copland Profile
$8.99 Includes liner notes by Dr. Jim Garvin, Laurence Bergreen, and Vangelis.
Mythodea is subtitled "Music for the NASA Mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey," and it's certainly an epic work. If its aspirations were any higher, it wouldn't even need NASA to break earth's gravity. In essence, it's the focus of Vangelis' symphonic ambitions, utilizing not only an orchestra, but two sopranos and a full choir to go alongside his banks of keyboards. With an everything-plus-the-kitchen-sink attitude, "Movement 1" shows its Mars intentions by borrowing the 5/4 rhythm from Holst's "Mars" and overlaying it with symphonic stabs of melody and voices galore. Synth space noises, pomp, and afew circumstances. ~ Chris Nickson
That itself isn't a problem. Epic can certainly be a good thing, and its roccoco grandeur can have its appeal. The problem, and it's certainly one here, comes when things are overblown, and the everything-plus-the-kitchen-sink attitude becomes wearying. After synth space noises, "Movement 1" shows its Mars intentions by borrowing the 5/4 rhythm from Holst's "Mars" (without credit) and overlaying it with symphonic stabs of melody and voices galore. But, and this is true of the entire disc, it goes nowhere. There's no sense of journey, and certainly ...

The outstanding Bulgarian-American pianist Pavlina Dokovska, the Brazilian guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima and others have recorded the complete set alternating tribute pieces with Debussy's own piano music, mostly taken from his two books of Préludes but also including such gems as L'isle joyeuse and La plus que lente . Most of the works that constitute the Tombeau de Claude Debussy or Epitaph to Claude Debussy are little known and have been recorded here for the first time. Nevertheless, they are important works of music in their own right. Three of them became the basis for larger works: the Ravel Duo for violin and cello later expanded into a Sonata, the Falla which became part of a set of Homenajas for guitar, and the Satie, the first of a group of Quatre Petites Melodies for voice and piano. In addition to the five composers already mentioned, other contributors included Paul Dukas, Eugene Goosens, Florent Schmitt and Albert Roussel. This recording constitutes the second in Labor Records' composer tribute series. Music of Tribute Vol. 1 is dedicated to the music of Villa-Lobos. TRACK LISTINGTombeau de Claude Debussy1.
