| | John Abercrombie Timeless CD (1975)
Rameau: Les Indes Galantes Suites / Herreweghe, Et Al
$15.55 (MP3 Available for Download) TIMELESS is right--in the future, this is the kind of interplanetary jazz they're going to be playing at the docking stations of newly colonized planets. Recorded in 1974, TIMELESS is very much a product of its age. Lightning fast guitar and keyboard runs, hi-hats, and drums writhe around each other in serpentine fury, giving way to moments of stately grace and calm waters such as "Love Song." Composer John Abercrombie has remained one of the great session men and in-demand guitarists in both jazz and avant-garde circles since the mid-'70s.
TIMELESS may inhabit the central nervous system of '70s fusion, but the playing of Abercrombie and colleagues Jan Hammer and drummer Jack DeJohnette manages to transcend the virtuosity of the genre, via crackerjack ensemble performances and some truly arresting compositions. The opener "Lungs" sets the tone--Abercrombie's spacy guitars arc in waves of sound, cresting on Hammer's spiky organ licks and gurgling synth frills, as DeJohnette's searing percussion threatens to send the entire escapade crashing onto a sonic reef. Whew.
Recorded at Generation Sound Studios, New York, New York on June 21 & 22, 1974.

| | Joan Baez Gracias A La Vida CD (1974) Import
Rameau: Les Indes Galantes Suites / Herreweghe, Et Al
$13.95 (MP3 Available for Download) This album is for those who both enjoy Joan Baez's smooth yet passionate singing, and appreciate the beauty of the accents and inflection of Spanish. Sung completely in the aforementioned Romance language, GRACIAS A LA VIDA is both traditional--no horn sections here--and decidedly exotic.
Baez's voice sound exquisite and natural; the album succeeds because of her sincere lyrical delivery and stunning elocution. Of particular note is her lush, memorable version of "Dida," featuring both the jazzy improvisations of singer Joni Mitchell, and the man said to be the most recorded guitarist ever, Tommy Tedesco. The soft rumba feel of "Llego Con Tres Heridas" provides a subtle finale to this foray into Spanish music.
The title translates as "Here's To Life" and the song it comes from was written by famed Chilean songwriter Violeta Parra. This album includes songs from the Chilean "New Song" movement of the 1970's (when it was recorded) as well as traditional Mexican ballads. It is also one of Ms. Baez's most acclaimed recordings for her gracious delivery and sensitivity to the material and the sheer beauty of her interpretations of the material at hand. Even if you don't understand a word of Spanish, you can't help but be moved by these outstanding performances. And if you "hablas Espanol", they are even sweeter to the ear. A&M 1994
