Personnel: El Hefe (vocals, guitar, trumpet, background vocals); Fat Mike (vocals, background vocals); Eric Melvin (guitar); Erik Ghint (drums, cymbals); Joey Kape, Mark Curry (background vocals). Recording information: Westbeach Recorders (01/1992). Unknown Contributor Role: John Yates. It's easy to see why a million suburban punk bands out there are heavily influenced by NOFX. The music is incredibly tight, the humor is off the wall, and they have no intentions in hiding the fact that they don't take a thing seriously. But the punch line is that they all make a living off this band, so go figure. Released between Ribbed and White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean, The Longest Line documents two firsts for NOFX: not only does it feature the debut of guitarist El Hefe, but it's also the first release on their Fat Wreck Chords label. As for the music, it's as tight and fast as ever with lots of added harmonies -- most notably on "Stranded" -- and a sarcastic sense of humor, most of which can be found on the ska parody "Kill All the White Man." ~ Mike DaRonco NOFX Longest Line Songs | 1. | Death of John Smith, The | |

Recorded at West Beach Recorders, Los Angeles, California in September 1990. Before NOFX became the fathers of humorous but hard-edged punk rock, they were just four pretty obnoxious Californians with a penchant for fast music and dirty jokes. Ribbed isn't exactly the group's breakthrough into content filled rock, but their typically hard-edged punk has enough dirty ...

| | NOFX Punk In Drublic CD (1994)
Longest Line
$9.89 Personnel: El Hefe (vocals, trumpet); Eric Melvin, Desi Mizrahi, Jeff Abarta, Kim Shattuck, Mark Curry (vocals). Audio Mixer: Ryan Greene. With their 1994 album Punk in Drublic, NOFX truly hit their stride. The quartet didn't change their approach at all -- at their core, they remain a heavy, speed-addled, hook-conscious post-hardcore punk group -- but their songwriting has improved, as has their attack. Prior to this record, they merely showed promise, but with Punk in Drublic they fulfilled their potential. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Though NOFX have stuck closely to their powerhouse hard-and-fast pop-punk sensibility since their inception in 1983, their focus, chemistry, and songwriting skills improved steadily over the years, and '94's PUNK IN DRUBLIC is arguably ...
| | NOFX Heavy Petting Zoo CD (1996)
Longest Line
$10.15 Recorded in October 1995. Personnel: NOFX (guitar, drums). Audio Mixer: Ryan Greene. Recording information: Fat Planet (10/1995); Razors Edge (10/1995). Photographer: Jay Blakesberg. The mildly offensive album art -- essentially, it's a play on the album's title -- disguises the fact that NOFX's punk rock is hardly breaking new ground. Taking the heavy guitar attack of the Sex Pistols and melding it with the us-against-them mentality of mid-'80s American hardcore, NOFX sounds like a conservative punk band with metal leanings. As an expression of adolescent rage, however, Heavy Petting Zoo serves its purpose -- it's basically a barrage of heavy riffs and gut-busting bellowing. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The mildly offensive album art -- essentially, it's a play on the album's title -- disguises the fact that NOFX's punk rock is hardly breaking new ground. | | Talk Talk Laughing Stock CD (1991)
Longest Line
$6.49 Personnel: Mark Hollis (vocals, guitar, piano, organ); George Robertson, Wilfred Gibson, Jack Glickman, Stephen Tees, Levine Andrade, Garfield Jackson, Gavyn Wright (viola); Roger Smith , Paul Kegg (cello); Mark Feltham (harmonica); Dave White (clarinet, contrabass clarinet); Henry Lowther (trumpet, flugelhorn); Tim Friese-Greene (piano, harmonium, organ); Ernest Mothle, Simon Edwards (acoustic bass); Lee Harris (drums); Martin Ditcham (percussion). Recording information: Wessex Studios, London, England (09/1990-04/1991); Wessex stuidos London (09/1990-04/1991). Virtually ignored upon its initial release, Laughing Stock continues to grow in stature and influence by leaps and bounds. Picking up where Spirit of Eden left off, the album operates outside of the accepted sphere of rock to create music which is both delicate and intense; recorded with a large classical ensemble, it defies easy categorization, conforming to very few structural precedents -- while the gently hypnotic "Myrrhman" flirts with ambient textures, the percussive "Ascension Day" drifts toward jazz before the ...

Longest Line
$10.49 Japanese import available on Epic/Sony (32 8P 132) with a running time of 40.47. Their full-length album debut is rough around the edges, but shows the band reaching beyond the tried and clichéd. ~ Scott Bultman Paddy McAloon had not yet found the key to the elegant compositions that made Prefab Sprout distinctive when it came time to record their debut, Swoon. He certainly tries hard to make his sophisticated contemporary pop sound distinctive, but the problem is that he does too many things at once -- the lyrics are overstuffed, and the music has too many chord changes and weird juxtapositions, as he tries to put white-funk beats to carefully crafted melodies. A few moments work, such as "Couldn't Bear to Be Special," but Swoon is primarily of interest as a historical item, since it only suggests the promise the band later filled. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Alongside debuts by the Smiths, Aztec Camera, ...
