Inarguably the world's greatest punk-pop cover band, Me First & the Gimme Gimmes take on popular singles of the 1960s,'70s, and '80s with their 1997 Fat Wreck Chords debut, HAVE A BALL. Consisting of members of Swingin' Utters, NOFX, No Use for a Name, and other Cal-punk peers, the semi-supergroup gleefully tears through guitar-driven, abbreviated versions of easy-going tunes such as Paul Simon's "Me & Julio Down By the Schoolyard," Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" (impressively nailing the vocal harmonies), and Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline," both paying tribute to and sending up the original numbers. For those seeking to jump into the Gimme Gimmes' reliably silly discography, this outing is a fine place to begin.

4 stars Really cool! Especially for the 30-somethings...
Awesome blend of popular seventies music with the up-beat, pop-punk sound of the eighties. Everybody I've let listen to this CD has ordered it... A must have!

5 stars Great cover album
The covers by MF&TGG'S are outstanding on this debut. It's most definitely their standout album. The big highlight for me was Rocket Man which is probably the most well constructed cover out of all of them. For the whole album it's pretty much straight forward punk in the same vein as the bands these guys come from, Lagwagon, No Use for a Name, and NOFX.

4 stars One of Their Best
I liked these guys even when I was going through my "Classic Rock Purist" stage. They are, like everyone has said, simply fun. They don't take themselves seriously, they seem to just enjoy playing, and their choice of songs shows a healthy appreciation and respect for good music. Also, some of their covers I even almost like better than the original! Four stars because though it seems like they have a good, healthy playlist, they play very quickly. This equates to less than a half an hour of music, which is sad when the music is so good.

4 stars Great if you like old songs!
Fat Mike and the boys from Fat Wreck Chrods, have done something extremly fun this time. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, take old songs from artists such as Elton John and Billy Joel, and bring them into the punk world. Now this is a fun album that is great to listen to, not anti goverment message, or any lryics from NOFX to kill all the white man. Just fun songs, from a fun loving band, that will let anyone have a good time.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes: Dave Raun, Fat Mike, Max Huber, Warren Fitzgerald , Spike Slawson. On their 2004 release, RUIN JONNY'S BAR MITZVAH, punk-rock supergroup/cover band Me First & the Gimme Gimmes conspire to do just that with their trademark caffeinated versions of 13 great bar mitzvah band hits (and a blessing). For no more than the retail price of a full-length disc, you'll be hearing their sensitive tribute to weekend guitar-store heroes everywhere, "Stairway to Heaven," along with the inspirationally misplaced "Auld Lang Syne," and an unnaturally accelerated version ...

Me First And The Gimmie Gimmes: Spike (vocals); Jake Jackson (guitar, ukulele); Joey Cape (guitar); Fat Mike (bass); Dave (drums). TAKE A BREAK drags punk rock's premier cover band back from their respective day jobs with NOFX, Lagwagon, and No Use For A Name for another trawl through the pop charts of yesteryear. Highlights include an "Isn't She Lovely" that's a collision of Gary Glitter and Stevie Wonder and a version of Lionel Richie's "Hello" that will only seem scary if you haven't heard their take on Aretha's "Natural Woman." All the above are delivered with the energy and genre-mixing panache you'd expect from these seasoned veterans, with enough variety ...

Me First And The Gimme Gimmes: Spike Slawson, Joey Cape, Fat Mike, Chris Shiflett, Dave Raun. A tribute mostly to the poppier, more bubblegum side of the '60s, Me First & the Gimme Gimmes' Blow in the Wind is a karaoke masterpiece, surprisingly the finest and punkest record they've released. The Gimme Gimmes' all-star punk rock cover band lineup, which includes members of NOFX, Lagwagon, and the Swingin' Utters, takes on mostly cheesy songs that baby boomer parents might get a kick out of, but which should make any self-respecting punks sick to their stomachs. For instance, the Gimme Gimmes somehow manage to take a dated hippie anthem like Cat Stevens' "Wild World" and make it rock like the holy jihad on the trail of a blasphemous author. Their version of "Elenor" by the Turtles begins with the opening to the Clash's "London Calling," complete with the bird squawk, and then ascends via "Elenor"'s extremely corny lyrics to the song's majestic chorus, which singer Spike Slawson takes way over the top, backed by the Gimme Gimmes' soaring harmonies. Most of the moldy oldies they've chosen to soup up are the stuff of drive-in movie theaters, soda fountains, varsity football games, and making eyes at the opposite sex. Skillfully, they've ...
