On Hit for Six, Brit punks Consumed deliver a searing swarm of hardcore guitars and drums. A few of the songs have tender, lovey-dovey vocals, but it is hard to tell because you are being jack-hammered into the ground by the quartet's sonic attack. All is not peace and love, though. For every "Sunnyside Up" -- a song that expresses the best in punk love -- there is the biting violence of "Black and Blue," which is about a guy getting his face flattened with a shovel. Consumed keep the variety coming throughout the album, with the one consistent element being the explosive metal-tinged punk that never stops. ~ Stacia Proefrock
Recorded between November 1998 & May 1999.
Consumed: Steve (vocals, guitar); Mike (guitar, background vocals); Baz (bass); Chris (drums).
Alternative Press (3/00, p.75) - 3 out of 5 - "...one of the sharpest, most listenable 'punk' albums of the year....The energy is there, the songs are memorable and bolstered by the solid production of Andy Sneap...who helps give the band weightier presence than most in the genre..." Hit For Six
$8.95 While it's true that Chris Connelly's contributions to Ministry, the Revolting Cocks, and the Damage Manual have earned him a deserved reputation as a squalid industrial rocker whose love of all things darkly humorous and "tribal" will go down in the history books documenting the era. But in taking his solo recordings as entities unto themselves, one can't help but think he might wish it were otherwise. As early as Whiplash Boychild there were traces of the "other" Chris Connelly: the savvy, vulnerable, and poetically astute singer/songwriter concealed by an image of excess. The softer identity was only given more weight by his late-'90s and early 21st century work with the Bells, Blonde Exodus, and Largo, and was underscored by his starkly sculpted Private Education in 2002. Connelly is often dubbed with the mantle of sounding a lot like early David Bowie -- à la Man Who Sold the World. But the bottom line is that the Thin White Duke should sound as consistently fine as Connelly does! Night of Your Life is an exquisitely crafted collection of off-kilter, elegant, adult pop songs that are presented with grace, elegance, and a wonderfully swaggering nocturnal decadence. Whether Connelly is delving into the androgynous pop of "Too Long in My Mind," with its glimmering guitars strummed into the heart of a mix dotted with single string lines and washes of ambient sound, or popping off with the desperate, edgy, angular slither of "Don't Landslide Away From Me," the effect is the same: a protagonist who seems to be looking out from the end of something, a relationship that is about to crumble or exists only in memory. This elegiac take on love and life and the scenics surrounding them -- Connelly wonderfully captures atmospheric details -- track further on the title track with its gorgeously layered backing male chorus (all voices are his own), as well as on the jagged Baroque new wave of "Stella (Stand Up for Your Man)." The pastoral glissando in "Glass Rose" stands in stark contrast where the shambolic protagonist holds his grief-laden view at a cool distance. In the sprightly ...
| | Brain Police CD (1968)
Hit For Six
$19.49 The Brain Police's sole LP, actually a demo disc in a plain sleeve made with the intention of attracting label interest, is fair but unexceptional local 1968 psychedelia. It's one of those records without any serious flaws, but also without any seriously exceptional properties to compel cult interest (although, obviously, it got some cult interest, as it eventually got reissued on CD with bonus tracks). There are baroque pop influences in some of the melodies, harmonies, and arrangements; shifts in tempo and tune that obviously took some time to work out, even if they weren't that striking; tight interplay between guitars and organ; and a bit of blues and heavy psych to the solos. Sometimes this has a nearly AM radio pop/rock bounce that's lighter than usual for bands of this ilk (as on "Find Me a Moment"), but there's also grinding bluesy rock ("Gypsy Fast Woman"); the intro to "Adler" takes liberally from Cream's arrangement of "I'm So Glad." [The CD reissue on Normal/Shadoks doubles the track listing with ten bonus cuts, including the 1969 single "World of Wax"/"Smoking at Windsor Hill"; the sunny, almost geeky pop/rock of a 1964 single by the Mandells, who included Brain Police songwriters Rick Randle and Norman Lombardo; and three garage singles from 1965-1966 ...
