| | Fat Music Vol. 4: Life In The Fat Lane CD
Another "best of Fat Wreck Chords" sampler that shows off the what's hip and happening on this label, it's almost worth the purchase ($3) considering that about 90 percent of this is previously released. If you must have everything by Good Riddance, Avail and No Use for a Name -- all of whom have unreleased material here -- it's still worth the price to see what this label has to offer. Like the first compilation (Fat Music for Fat People), Fat Music Vol. IV gets three stars alone for coming up with this idea. Other highlights include tracks by Lagwagon, NOFX, Wizo, Strung Out and the Swingin' Utters. ~ Mike DaRonco

Fat Music Vol. 4: Life In The Fat Lane
$13.89 The story of Brad Nowell could easily be compared to that of the late John Belushi. Nowell was a gifted artist who knew full well the dangers of excess. His promising life was tragically cut short by a drug overdose just as his career was hitting its stride. GREATEST HITS chronicles the short, sweet trip taken by Nowell and his comrades in Sublime.

| | Weird Al Yankovic Poodle Hat CD (2003)
Fat Music Vol. 4: Life In The Fat Lane
$8.99 Novelty acts by their very definition tend to be fleeting; once their novelty wears off, the humor evaporates and the performer is a footnote, an answer to a trivia question, if even that. POODLE HAT marks the third decade of parody king "Weird Al" Yankovic's work, with the modern master of all that's silly is still garnering attention and selling albums, showing no sign of stopping. No matter how inured one might be to his antics, it's hard to deny some of his truly gut-busting moments. Take the Eminem parody "Couch Potato," which skewers practically every television show and related fad of the previous four years, even offering rather trenchant commentary on reality television; it's hard to tell if he's kidding or serious when he spouts "next week on Fox watch lions eat Christians."
Most importantly, the parody is deft and dead-on, as most novelty acts who have managed any kind of career from Spike Jones to Tom Lehrer have been students of their art, an art surprisingly complex for all its silliness. POODLE HAT matches the usual expectations of Yankovic fans, featuring the usual anticipated and hilarious polka medley and a startlingly deft guest shot by piano man Ben Folds.
POODLE HAT won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album.

| | Marius Nordal Notoriety CD (1996)
Fat Music Vol. 4: Life In The Fat Lane
$12.89 It's easy to classify a jazz performer as a journeyman when he/she isn't well-known, doesn't have a slew of CDs, awards, or other accouterments of fame. Perhaps that's OK now and then, but not in the case of Marius Nordal. Working out of the jazz-rich Northwest U.S., he has carved himself a niche by working gigs, doing big band arrangements, teaching, and, in all cases, being a consummate master of the keys. On his initial album for the Origin label, Nordal wheels out all his stylistic cannons. "Billy Boy" is a rip-roaring, high-speed dazzler where the entire keyboard gets swept over in the process. Contrast that to a melodic and sometimes slightly off center, but serenading, "But Beautiful," with its striking coda, and one finds that Nordal is comfortable no matter what the pace or intricacy of the arrangement. "Smiles" is not only the vehicle for more lyrical pianism and twisting improvisation, but for Doug Miller's billowing basslines ...

Fat Music Vol. 4: Life In The Fat Lane
$22.09 Recorded in 1982. Includes liner notes by Martin Fry and Giles Smith.
Easily one of the '80s' finest albums, THE LEXICON OF LOVE not only established singer Martin Fry and guitarist Mark White as two of the decade's smartest and most skillful cross-breeders of Motownish dance grooves, Beatlesque pop and Roxy Music-style art-rock urgency, it cemented ex-Buggle Trevor Horn's status as the era's defining producer.
Throughout THE LEXICON OF LOVE, Horn's over-the-top blend of strings, horns, lush choirs ...
