Kool & The Gang Something Special CD (1981)
Best of the 70s & 80s CD music All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology.
With their long track record, Kool & the Gang have always offered dance-provoking rhythms and Something Special fits that bill, too. Featuring the number one single "Take My Heart (You Can Have It If You Want It)," James "J.T." Taylor approaches the song in a cool, mesmerizing tone, closing out the vamp in his falsetto with a burst of energy while the background vocals chant the subtitle throughout the chorus. Not known to lead a song in falsetto, Taylor further utilizes this talent on the motivated rhythms of the nocturnal scenario of "Steppin' Out." It maintained a steady stride, rising to the number ten spot on the charts. The third single from the album was "Get Down on It." As the title indicates, this is a gritty funk track that worked its way up the charts to claim the number three position, selling more than 500,000 copies. Although there were no more charted singles from this album, the entire collection is deserving of recognition. On a slower note, "Pass It On" and "No Show" received regional airplay. The former encourages people to spread love to all children, and the latter is a sorrowful account of a man left standing in the rain, waiting for the love that never showed. Both singles have similar rhythm arrangements. As for inspirational songs, "Stand Up and Sing" is a moderately paced single with lyrics that are uplifting. ~ Craig Lytle

Myanna One Never Knows CD (2004)
Best of the 70s & 80s album for sale Myanna, a veteran saxophonist based in the Boston area, is quite impressive throughout this soul-jazz set. Playing mostly originals that are soulful and bluesy, straddling the line between jazz and R&B, Myanna displays strong and often-powerful tones on four different saxophones. Sometimes she overdubs a second horn on melody statements. Her backup band keeps the grooves moving and displays individuality but Myanna is the main star. Whether it be a passionate R&B-ish ballad that is dedicated to the late Illinois Jacquet ("For Illinois") or a romp ("Road Rhythm" is a high point), she excels on this very likable date. Myanna deserves to be much better known. ~ Scott Yanow
CD REVIEW BY JOHN MARCUS; JAZZREVIEW.
COM
Myanna and a very talented group of world-class musicians cover a wide range of emotions and atmospheres on this incredible collection of songs. If I had to pick one song from this CD to give you an example of Myanna's strength on the saxophone, I would ask for two and try to slip in a third one. The best place to start is in the beginning. Myanna gives David Limina the honors of playing the first notes on the album. 47 seconds of sizzling Hammond B3 sets off a chain reaction of Jazz that sadly, has moments of silence between tracks. Such is the anticipation of the next number that I fast-forwarded just as each song ended to allow these folks to keep on playing.
Myanna gives you the funky, the furious, and the flow, as she transitions through this recording. You want to have friends over for drinks? Going on a long drive? You want to spend a romantic evening with your soul-mate? How about your favorite Jazz station? I can see Myanna occupying all these spaces at once, because she's given us something for all occasions. Solos, exchanges, melodies, and most of all, FUN...interlaced within every note the band plays.
Electrifying one moment, and soothing the next. "One Never Knows" what's coming from this classy and saxy lady. Although she's been in the game for a long time, pleasing crowds in the Northeast, this could be the one that finally gets her some well-deserved attention internationally. I certainly hope so. Keep on jammin, Myanna!

Christian Richet Waves CD (2005)
Best of the 70s & 80s buy CD music First trained as a percussionist, keyboards player Christian RICHET has become one of the greatest French specialists in Seventies-like electronic music. And if this personal development reminds that of Klaus SCHULZE, his works differ significantly from the canons of the German school (TANGERINE DREAM, ASH RA TEMPEL, POPOL VUH...). However, his works remain heavily influenced by his strong personality, and an unquestionable rock culture. As much through his sounds as his multi-influenced melodies, the five tracks of "Percutone" (1998) take the listener to a peaceful and percussive journey. Again released on the Dreaming label, the fifth album "Waves" (2004) presents both a percussive and melodic music. In particular, one suite entitled "Marching - Part Two", which is about half an hour long, is to be heard. This is the follow-up to "Yada", a similar project, available on the previous album. As for "When It's Raining...", this is a theme chosen by the France Culture radio for illustrat

Jazzonia Little Boy Don't Get Scared CD (2006)
Best of the 70s & 80s songs Jazzonia was formed by legendary producer Alan Douglas and avant-gardist Bill Laswell. Other artists include Bootsy Colins & Nicky Skopelitis to name a few. Douglas. 2006.
When bassist and producer Bill Laswell puts together a project like this one, it's hard not to feel a little twinge of trepidation: his ability to pull together top-drawer talent is nearly unparalleled (and in this case he's gathered such A-list names as Grandmaster Melle Mel, Roc Raida, Amina Claudine Myers, Graham Haynes, and Bootsy Collins, among others), and he frequently puts them together in unusual and revelatory ways and draws exceptional performances from them. But when a Laswell project falls flat it falls really flat, and for this one he's set himself an unusually daunting challenge: to recast classic jazz and jump-blues songs in a dub/funk/electro/hip-hop setting. And this one really is a success, if at times an unlikely one. Opening with the obscure King Pleasure song "Little Boy Don't Get Scared," which is given a strangely laid-back, loping hip-hop arrangement, he proceeds to build dark and dubby structures into which the swinging vocals of Asante, Dana Bryant, Myers, and Alicia Renee are able to float and dance with plenty of room but also solid rhythmic support. At times the result evokes Skip McDonald's various projects with On-U Sound (notice the especially Little Axe-ish "I'm Gone"), and at others it evokes the early Material funk-soul project One Down. But every single track sounds unmistakably like a Laswell joint: the focus on old-school turntablism, the bottomless but richly melodic basslines, the retreating dubwise drum echoes. And in one thrilling departure, he takes the Duke Ellington standard "Cottontail" down a junglist rabbithole, with dubbed-up trumpets, skittering turntables, and layers of reverb-laden drums swirling in concentric circles of polyrhythmic bliss. Chalk this one up as another Bill Laswell triumph. ~ Rick Anderson
