Collectables' Expressway to Your Heart is essentially a reissue of the Soul Survivors' 1967 album, When the Whistle Blows Anything Goes, augmented by one bonus track (an extended version of "Explosion in Your Soul"). Though only the title track -- a head-spinning, mind-warping, hard Philly soul track with a tough groove and layers of sound effects -- is the only true classic here; the album is nevertheless endlessly fascinating, particularly in how it shows the genesis of the Gamble & Huff sound, only cocooned within a psychedelic soul setting. So it should come as little surprise that this is a bit of a period piece, particularly in its trippy sound effects and elastic jams; but within that there is top-notch songwriting from Gamble & Huff, and a wild, diverse band that did a lot here, but were probably just a little too ahead of their time to get the respect they deserved. Heard years later, it's a prescient, fascinating album, well worth the time of any soul fanatic; and it is given a nice reissue treatment here (even if it doesn't boast its original title). ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Includes liner notes by David L. Brown.

The Soul Survivors: Charlie Ingui, Richie Ingui, Kenny Jeremiah (vocals); Chuck Trois (guitar); Paul Venturini (Hammond organ); Joey Forgione (drums).

Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll: Too Young To Die
Jethro Tull Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll: Too Young To Die CD  (1976) Bonus Tracks

Although Jethro Tull was still in its heyday in 1976, Ian Anderson must have sensed that he could not remain a rock star forever. Anderson originally intended the linked songs on TOO OLD TO ROCK 'N' ROLL to form the basis of a musical based on the life of an aging rocker not unlike himself. Anderson's alter ego on the record is Ray Lomax, whose tale is told in cartoon format in the album art. Not coincidentally, Lomax is a cartoon version of Anderson. The record alternates between folk and rock as it chronicles Lomax's struggles to exist outside a rock framework. He makes a foray into TV game shows ("Quizz Kid"), drinks despairingly with an old codger who dispenses advice on the gentle, introspective "From a Deadbeat to an Old Greaser" and steals a taxi for a romantic rendezvous on the upbeat "Taxi Grab." The title track, a stately epic that builds to a rousing finale, garnered significant airplay on FM radio and is one of the band's last hits from their golden age. This album was summarily dismissed by reviewers, who universally invoked their handbooks of hackneyed "critic speak." Cop-out terms like "indulgent" and "pretentious" were bandied about, employing the popular critic's method of simply discrediting an album due to its concurrent release with the arrival of punk-rock- - as if that were an intellectually sound critique given the virtually unrelated style of Jethro Tull's music. The main knock on this album is the ill-conceived concept involving an aging rock star. That is a valid observation, but what rock concept albums are deserving of literary accolades? Precious few, if any. Lyrical themes notwithstanding, Too Old to Rock 'N' Roll is a fine collection of independent rock songs that marked a return to the classic Tull style carved out on Aqualung and Benefit. Absent here are the muddled epic-length pieces synonymous with Thick As a Brick and A Passion Play, the pop leanings of War Child, and the complexity of Minstrel in the Gallery. So despite being the target of disparaging reviews, this album achieved modest chart success and boasted several quality rockers like "Quizz Kid," "Taxi Grab," and "Big Dipper." Martin ...
New York: A Mix Odyssey
Armand Van Helden New York: A Mix Odyssey CD  (2004)

Expressway To Your Heart CD music
CD $16.39  5 stars Audio Samples
Armand Van Helden, the superstar late-'90s house producer forever known for gracing the world with the epochal "U Don't Know Me" (among a few other big hits), dropped off the club/dance map for several years after his Gandhi Khan album bombed in the wake of 9/11 (the album was released only a couple weeks after the tragedy and, understandably yet unfortunately, didn't go over well as a result). Granted, Van Helden was already in a bit of creative slump by that point, but the disregard of that album must have really sunk his spirits, because he was simply nowhere to be heard from for years (not even a one-off commercial single surfaced) -- that is, until the release of New York: A Mix Odyssey in 2004. This release by Tommy Boy serves no doubt as the almighty "comeback" that most flagging artists resort to in a bid to reestablish themselves. And like most comebacks, New York is a fairly safe release -- one that is what remaining fans most likely expect from Van Helden (true-blue house music à la New York City), one that is risk free and fairly mass-market orientated (a DJ mix with a couple inclusions everybody knows), and one that is anchored by a sure-fire hit single ("Hear My Name," a Van Helden-goes-electroclash anthem). As such, New York: A Mix Odyssey is an effective comeback. The new single may sound like an outtake from Felix da Housecat's Kittenz and Thee Glitz, but that's precisely its charm. In fact, Van Helden ...
