(3 Customer Reviews)
Short-lived Texas psychedelic rockers Bubble Puppy stuck around long enough for only one album, but A GATHERING OF PROMISES is a fine legacy. It contains the band's signature single, "Hot Smoke and Sasafrass," which actually hit the Top 40 at the time, and it shows Bubble Puppy to have been heavily influenced by West Coast contemporaries like Moby Grape, mixing three-part harmonies and solid songcraft with a tasty dash of fuzz-guitar frenzy.
Unpretentious psychedelic punk from one of the more accessible bands hatched by Texas' International Artists label. The most striking aspect is the fast and fluid guitar work, closer in spirit to Bobby Fuller than some of the more solo-happy guitar gods of the day. "Hot Smoke and Sasafrass" was the surprise hit off the album, although most of the other songs continue in the same vein, with harmonies reminiscent of some of the better Haight-Ashbury bands. ~ Peter Kurtz

| | Clear Light CD (1967)
Gathering Of Promises songs
$11.59 Kind of a minor league version of the Doors, Clear Light were a West Coast phenomenon, and although they didn't last too long, were an interesting group. A very good slice of Los Angeles psychedelia, Clear Light were a six-piece band that combined folk, rock, psychedelia, and even a touch of classical to their sound. The end result, though, is a little ponderous and pretentious, but strangely listenable. The big hit off this album (produced by Paul Rothchild and engineered by Bruce Botnick) was "Mr. Blue," a psychedelic folk song written by Tom Paxton. It's over six-minutes long and a bit overbaked, but it does have an odd appeal. The finer moments are guitarist Bob Seal's psychedelic folk-rock songs, namely "With All in Mind" and "They Who Have Nothing." Singer Cliff DeYoung went on to have a successful acting career, bass player Doug Lubahn played on the early Doors albums, Dallas Taylor went on to drum for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and John Sebastian, and keyboardist Ralph Schuckett became one of ...
| | Grand Funk Railroad Grand Funk CD (1970) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Gathering Of Promises album
$8.85 Grand Funk Railroad's 1970 somewhat eponymous album, their second for Capitol, is characteristic of the classic rock radio sound that would permeate the airwaves of the late 20th century. Grand Funk Railroad was a seminal force in giving the friendlier side of the heavy rock sound its charm and making it stick. Built on fuzzed-out blues riffs, simple lyrics, and at times seemingly unnecessary jamming, Grand Funk's songs are mild in nature. Far less extreme than Black Sabbath, but slightly toothier than Foghat or Bad Company, Grand Funk's major influence is from the loose, blues-based power trio formula of bands such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Grand Funk combines rawness with radio-friendly melodies and vocal harmonies that would become their trademark sound. Hordes of bands to come, from Foreigner to Bon Jovi, would emulate Grand Funk's sound and style, focusing on good-time rocking material while attempting a few token social commentary pieces. This is a good album as far as early hard rock goes, and as Grand Funk Railroad would move farther and farther away from the type of roughness and loose arrangements found here, it is well worth picking up as an example of one of their early efforts. ~ Jeff Schwachter

| | Eric Sardinas Black Pearls CD (2003)
Gathering Of Promises CD music
$10.09 Eric Sardinas is a good, even great, electric slide player, and his Dobro skills are equally as impressive. His band on Black Pearls, Paul Loranger on bass and Mike Dupke on drums, is also quite good. The songs, all written by Sardinas, sound good and rock hard, although you've heard all this said before. (Granted, blues feeds on recycled lyrics, and it is undoubtedly hard to find a new way to say "I've been down so long I'm gonna leave you.") The highlights here -- the cheerful pop-blues of "Big Red Line," the bluegrass-paced Dobro work on "Old Smyrm Road" -- come on songs that step a little bit outside the blues-boogie template. ~ Steve Leggett
Eric Sardinas is a good, even great, electric slide player, and his Dobro skills are equally as impressive. His band on Black Pearls, Paul Loranger on bass and Mike Dupke on drums, is also quite good. The problem here is the material. The songs, all written by Sardinas, are at the worst end of blues cliché. They sound good and rock hard, but in the end, you've heard all this said before, and probably better. Granted, blues feeds on recycled lyrics, and it is undoubtedly hard to find a new way to say "I've been down so long I'm gonna leave you," but it can be done (Otis Taylor comes immediately to mind). The highlights here -- the cheerful pop-blues of "Big Red Line," the bluegrass-paced Dobro work on "Old Smyrm Road" -- come on songs that step a little bit outside ...

Gathering Of Promises songs

Includes material recorded shortly before Marvin Gaye's death, including five previously unreleased tracks.
This 1974 concert documents a superb performer at the height of his popularity. The show was a rare treat for fans, since Gaye was just coming off a three-year, self-imposed period of isolation and a refusal to sing in public. The artist's reputed nervousness and fragility are nowhere in evidence, however, as he burns through superior treatments of such classics as "Trouble Man," What's Going On," "Inner City Blues," "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)," and the unsurpassable "Let's Get It On."
Gaye croons with soulful intensity throughout, in a sweet and silky tenor. If the waves of female screams emanating from the audience are any indication, his voice is doing exactly what ...
