This disc contains two complete albums by Les Paul and Mary Ford: Bye Bye Blues from 1952 and Les and Mary from 1955. Bye Bye Blues boasts the Top Five title track and the lesser hits "Jazz Me Blues" and "Smoke Rings," while Les and Mary includes the minor hits "Moritat (Theme From Three Penny Opera)" and "Nuevo Laredo." The latter is particularly novel, featuring Ford multi-tracked into a veritable vocal chorus while Paul creates a phasing effect on his guitar. Paul's instrumentals, like the high-speed "Mammy's Boogie" and a jazzy interpretation of "On the Sunny Side of the Street," are interspersed with Ford's vocal numbers on these two albums, with a somewhat lower proportion of instrumentals than New Sound/Les Paul's New Sound. ~ Greg Adams

Bye Bye Blues/Les And Mary album
$13.29 The Hit Makers!/Time to Dream contains two albums from 1953 and 1956, respectively. The Hit Makers! is an early greatest-hits collection that includes the number one hit "How High the Moon," which has been cited by some critics as a contender for the title of first rock & roll recording. The Hit Makers! also has "The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise," the distinctive sound ...

$13.29 Both the NEW SOUND and THE NEW SOUND VOLUME II, recorded in 1950 and 1951, respectively, and brought together here in one set, are billed as releases by Mary Ford and Les Paul. Ford takes something of a backseat on these dates, however, as ...
| | John Mayall And The Bluesbreakers - Jammin' With The Blues Greats DVD (2004)
Bye Bye Blues/Les And Mary music CDs
$7.79 Alone, John Mayall is a blues musician to be reckoned with--an impressive force of longing emotion. But on one very special night in 1982, his musical power was heightened tenfold by a bevy of great performers who accompanied him in concert. On a warm summer stage in the Garden State, Mayall is joined by five legends of the blues: Albert King, Buddy Guy, Etta James, Junior Wells, and Sippie ...
| | Dean Martin Winter Romance CD (1959)
Bye Bye Blues/Les And Mary songs
$11.95 A Winter Romance is perhaps best described as a "seasonal" album rather than a Christmas or holiday release, despite the inclusion of such familiar fare as "White Christmas" and "Winter Wonderland." Dean Martin has also included such standards as "The Things We Did Last Summer" and "June in January," as well as some specially written material such as Sammy Cahn and Ken Lane's title song and "It Won't Cool Off." Nevertheless, with its lush strings, well-scrubbed vocal choruses and buoyant mood, this collection has an appropriately festive feel. Martin does a competent job, even having fun here and there when the song allows him to present his take on a similar baritone (Bing Crosby on "White Christmas," Vaughn Monroe on "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!") or when the subject matter strays to something more comfortably suggestive like "Baby, It's Cold Outside" (performed with a female vocal chorus instead of a single female duet partner). All of which is to say that Martin makes the best of the situation without doing anything special with it. (The CD reissue ...

| | Concord Jazz Christmas, Vol. 2 CD (1996)
Bye Bye Blues/Les And Mary music CDs
$10.39 With the exception of a live version of Mel Torme singing "The Christmas Song" in 1988, all of the selections on this Christmas CD were recorded by various Concord artists from 1995-96. There is plenty of variety in both instrumentation and moods, yet the overall results are consistently pleasing, and there is lots of fine playing. Heard here are trumpeter Maynard Ferguson (performing a six-song "Christmas Medley"), singer Dennis Rowland, tenorman Rickey Woodard (romping through "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"), flutist Ali Ryerson, vocalist Marlena Shaw, guitarist Jeff Linsky, organist Jack McDuff, pianist Gerry Wiggins, singer Mary Stallings, altoist Jesse Davis, guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima, trumpeter Randy Sandke ("It Came Upon a Midnight Clear"), pianist Manfredo Fest, Nnenna Freelon (singing a couple of spirituals), pianist Sergio Salvatore, Chris Potter (taking "O Come All Ye Faithful" as an unaccompanied tenor solo), and Torme. ~ Scott Yanow
