This brings together 14 of Adam's landmark recordings for the Herald label, kicking off with her gospel-oriented smash "Shake a Hand," still sounding fresh as it did back in 1953. Her other two hits for the label, "Hurts Me to My Heart" and "I'll Be True," are here along with fine non-charters like "Everyday," "Angels Tell Me," and a nice turn on "Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere." Adams kept recording after Herald, trying to find another hit, and eventually moved back to gospel music, but these are the sides that defined her sound. ~ Cub Koda

| | Margie Joseph Makes A New Impression/Phase II CD (1999)
Golden Classics
$12.49 A two-for-one CD reissue of Margie Joseph's two early-'70s albums for Stax, with the addition of lengthy liner notes by Stax authority Rob Bowman. Like some of Stax's product from this era, there's a Stax-meets-Motown air to much of the material. Although Margie Joseph Makes a New Impression was cut in Memphis and Muscle Shoals, ...
| | Best Of My Love: The Best Of The Emotions CD (1996)
Golden Classics
$6.75 This 16-track, 69-minute disc surveys the Emotions' five-year, five-album stay on Columbia Records (and the custom label ARC), which was the group's most successful period, featuring the gold number one hit "Best of My Love" and the gold Top Ten hit "Boogie Wonderland" (on which the Emotions backed their mentors, Earth, Wind & Fire), both of which are heard here, along with four other songs that saw action on the pop charts. Surprisingly, the Emotions' five singles that only made the R&B charts are excluded in favor of album tracks. Unlike their earlier period at Stax, at Columbia the Emotions were essentially an adjunct to EW&F and its leader, Maurice White, and since EW&F featured tenor and falsetto vocals, the similarity was often heightened, especially on "Boogie Wonderland." Nevertheless, the sisters sang well over the horns and disco rhythms that characterized the ...

| | Rosco Gordon No Dark In America CD (2005)
Golden Classics
$12.25 Recorded over five years in no less than ten locations, ranging from decent studios to living rooms with dozens of musicians live and overdubbed, No Dark in America represents the last will and testament of one of this country's greatest if obscure songwriters. Issued by Dualtone for Skuntry and produced by Elijah "Lij" Shaw with support from his label partner, Chris King, these 15 songs represent the great Rosco Gordon at a creative peak. Along with Brad Jones and Audley Freed, Ken Coomer makes an appearance on these sides as well. Gordon is widely regarded as the true source of ska reggae's heartbeat, based on the unique rhythmic pattern of his ...
| | Little Richard Get Rich Quick CD (2005) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Golden Classics
$14.09 Little Richard made some of the most frantic and thrilling singles of the first rock & roll era of the 1950s, but he'd been cutting records for several years before he rolled into Cosimo Matassa's New Orleans recording studio and threw his career into high gear with the epochal "Tutti Frutti." Get Rich Quick: The Birth of a Legend, 1951-1954 is a compilation which pulls together Richard's early sides for RCA's Peacock label and documents his formative years while he was still getting his trademark style in order. Richard's voice is in fine shape on the 16 Peacock cuts included here (as well as six alternate takes which also appear), but he had yet to unleash the trademark scream that so memorably punctuated his Specialty recordings, and his flailing piano style (supposedly modeled after his mentor, Esquerita) had similarly yet to manifest itself in the studio. As a result, Richard sounds less like a manic rocker and more like an old-school R&B act in the manner of Wynonie Harris or the Treniers, but without the intensity of either. One gets the sense that while Richard sounds fine here, this isn't quite what he was cut out to do, and in retrospect it's not surprising that these sessions didn't click with listeners the way his later New Orleans sessions did. ...
