As much as any 18 song collection could, this single CD presents a decent cross-section of the New York-based label's biggest hits. The range of material includes the biggest or best-known hits by Ike & Tina Turner ("It's Gonna Work Out Fine," "A Fool In Love"), Inez Foxx ("Mockingbird"), Baby Washington ("A Handful of Memories," "That's How Heartaches Are Made"), Bobby Hendricks ("Itchy Twitchy Feeling"), the Poets ("She Blew A Good Thing"), Wilbert Harrison ("Let's Work Together"), and Jimmy McGriff ("I've Got A Woman"), among others. There will be a few surprises here, including the degree to which Bobby Hendricks sounded like Jackie Wilson, and how much Tina Britt's 1965 hit "The Real Thing" (issued on Eastern Records) was imitative of "Heat Wave" by Martha and the Vandellas. The sound is excellent, probably derived from the same body of masters that EMI assembled to put together its own Sue Records Story box that same year, and the annotation is decently detailed, at least where the major acts are concerned, if a little unstructured. ~ Bruce Eder

Best Of Sue Records music CDs
$14.45 Former Cash Money golden boy--the man credited with coining the term "bling"--is back, following up on his string of Chopper City mixtapes with a group album featuring his crew, the Chopper City Boyz. Sniper, VL Mike, Gar, and B.G.'s little brother, Hakim, all hold their own alongside their mentor. The clique's collective gritty Nawlins rhyme style and gangsta lyricism at times recalls the glory of the Cash Money golden age.
Released almost a year after it was announced that rapper B.G. was leaving Koch and setting sail on Atlantic Records, the B.G. & the Chopper City Boyz release We Got This landed on Koch with a whole lot of Chopper City Boyz and less B.G. than you'd expect judging from the artwork. Perhaps there are some contractual obligations to fill, or maybe this is a way to build a Hot Boys type empire from the street up since B.G. has declared that the Chopper City Boyz are designed to fill the hole left by the demise of his former group, who were likewise indie before they were major. It also took a couple albums before the members of the Hot Boys started to shine as individual personalities, and for this crew, it looks to be no different. Rappers Hakim, V.L. Mike, Sniper, and Gar are all well above competent, but picking a favorite is difficult since the highlights on the album are the tracks with the whole group and individual showcases are more like filler. Best of the group tracks is the chilling "Taking Over," a threatening number that begins with a sample of New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin dropping some bleak words before the group lays out their tales ...
