Though Collectables' presentation certainly leaves something to be desired -- it's one of their early titles and it lacks extensive packaging -- they should still be commended for having the only Benny Spellman collection available on CD. Many of his tracks are available on various-artists collections, but this is the only disc available under his own name; and the 16-track collection proves that he was one of the finest New Orleans vocalists of the early 60s. His smooth baritone found a perfect fit with Allen Toussaint's typical, earthily elegant production, and he had a great set of material, too, highlighted by the hits "Fortune Teller" and "Lipstick Traces (On a Cigarette)." The other tunes may not be hits, but they are worthy additions in that tradition; making this a necessary set for New Orleans R&B fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Deep Purple Machine Head CDs (1972) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Fortune Teller
$10.69 This package contains the original MACHINE HEAD plus quadrophonic mixes of 2 songs on one disc, MACHINE HEAD remixed by Roger Glover in 1998, and a 28 page booklet.
A probable contender for one of hard rock's "all-time most influential albums," Deep Purple's MACHINE HEAD has all the markings of a heavy classic. It was here that the band's combination of amped-up blues, progressive instrumental prowess, screaming guitars, and thunderous rhythms was crystallized for the ages, helping to lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s. The lone presence of "Smoke on the Water" immediately elevates the album to essential status. The song became a long-running radio staple, and boasts one of the most instantly recognizable guitar riffs in rock history.
Yet the rest of the album holds ...

| | Deep Purple Who Do We Think We Are? CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Fortune Teller
$9.65 After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite all the infighting, the band pulled together long enough to record seven tracks that only bolstered the band's reputation.
The best-known song, "Woman From Tokyo," boasted a riff as memorable as the one that defined "Smoke on the Water" and was later admitted by Ritchie Blackmore to have been cribbed from Eric Clapton's "Cat Squirrel." Although Blackmore's always-impressive riffing stands out on such songs as "Mary Long" and "Place in Line," this album also spotlights how far Jon Lord's contributions on organ went toward defining the ...

| | Quantum Dots Inventing Reality CD (2003)
Fortune Teller
$11.35 In the world of science, Quantum Dots are a recent creation that use semiconductor material that dynamically changes the properties of matter. Taken literally: "programmable matter." Like their namesake, The Quantum Dots (from Portland, Oregon) dynamically shift moods, creating complex, orchestral compositions that range from subtle ambient soundscapes to crushing thrashfests. Multi-instrumentalist Eric Sterling and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Dean Blair use state of the art synthesizer technology, alternating melodic/heavy guitars, both live and programmed drums, and masterfully-integrated soaring vocals to create these highly cinematic songs. Guests on their debut album, "Inventing Reality," include Jyri Glynn of The Sins playing electric violin on half of the songs, Chris Gaye on bass for 3 tracks, Ned Wahl (ex-Chemlab, ...
| | Pete Seeger At 89 CD (2008)
Fortune Teller

AT 89 finds this folk stalwart in fine form, delivering one of the most musically expansive outings ...
