Rock the Boat: Golden Classics may not have many songs as great as "Rock the Boat" (although it's nice to hear Allen Toussaint's "Freedom for the Stallion") but it summarizes the Hues Corporation's recordings well. It's frothy pop-soul and disco, with pleasing grooves -- sometimes the grooves get a little repetitive, but nothing is outright bad here, either. Not really something to seek out, but not bad, all the same. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Rock The Boat: Golden Classics Music Hues Corporation Rock The Boat: Golden Classics Songs | 1. | Rock the Boat | $0.99 | |

| | Very Best Of The Originals CD (1999)
Rock The Boat: Golden Classics CD music
$6.99 All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology.
The Very Best of the Originals includes their hits from the late '60s through the mid-'70s, along with some LP cuts, B-sides, and unreleased tracks. The first six songs were produced or co-produced by Marvin Gaye in 1969 and 1970 (including the hits "Baby I'm for Real" and "The Bells"). These have been sometimes cited as forerunners to his What's Going On album, but it would be wrong to view them as a What's Going On supplement. They're in much more of a lush, group vocal, sweet soul style, although some traces of ideas Gaye would play with in the early '70s are present, particularly in the way the background voices ...

| | Always & Forever: The Best Of Heatwave CD (1996)
Rock The Boat: Golden Classics songs
$7.59 Always and Forever is a masterful look at one of the funkiest disco bands ever to grace a DJ's table. This compilation, set up like most, is packed with hits in chronological order, showcasing not only a great dance set, but also the important chronicle of an underrated band. With the band's two smash singles "Boogie Nights" and "The Groove Line" kicking things off, this disc essentially traces Heatwave's history though their singles releases with a smattering of extra tunes thrown in for good measure. As a whole, the set is also a record of the subtle changes in composition and performance that took the band from disco sensibilities to a richer and far more textured soft funk, most notably on "Gangsters of the Groove." Of course, there is some pure funk here too, and "Lettin' It Loose" is a reminder that this band did have a few other tricks up their sleeves. And, of course, since Heatwave are best remembered as a disco band, the fan won't be disappointed either. Special disco ...

| | Best Of Blue Magic CD (1974)
Rock The Boat: Golden Classics CD music
$7.55 Blue Magic's sublime sophomore effort manages to retain the delicate beauty of their debut while summoning a more confident, robust approach to group harmony. The Magic of the Blue is above all a celebration of the human voice in all its myriad forms of expression. Whether transcending contrived ballads like "Three-Ring Circus" (a bland rewrite of the earlier hit "Sideshow") or soaring on the strength of up-tempo dance tunes like the excellent title cut, Blue Magic's harmonies ...

| | Larkin Grimm Parplar CD (2008) Digipak
Rock The Boat: Golden Classics CD music
$12.79 Parplar might be in some ways a folk record, or at least a folky singer/songwriter one. But if so, it's at the freakiest margins of those genres -- not in a distasteful outsider way, but in a pretty impressive and certainly very eclectic one. A major aspect of that eclecticism is the sheer number of instruments employed, including not just Larkin Grimm's own acoustic guitar, dulcimer banjo, Casio, and Chinese harp, but also accordion, dobro, viola, trumpet, violin, trombone, electric guitar, and more by numerous supporting musicians. But the most important element of the music -- and one that's just as varied in timbre as the instrumentation -- is Grimm's voice, which can go from angelic high crooning to mischievous, low, whispery phrasing, as well ...
