Looking for classic-sounding gospel in which the quality of the instrumental work is as fine as the singing is impassioned? This fine best-of is one such album. Nimble, Steely Dan-like guitar fills (with occasional wah-wah touches), funky percussion, tight and tasteful horns, and minimal strings create a grooving background over which Norwood sings her praises of the divine. Norwood's voice can be breathy like Dionne Warwick's or sweet-toned, light, and vibrato-rich like Sarah Vaughn's. "Way Out Jesus" is perhaps the best example of her range, and is one of the album's most uplifting tracks. Other standouts include the funky "Big Boat Ride," the slow and devotional "Take It to Jesus," the gently wrought "Jesus Is the Way," and the soupy "What a Beautiful World This Could Be."

$12.79 Trumpeter and composer Mark Isham rises to the occasion with his score for director Gavin O'Connor's Miracle. The film chronicles the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team's rousing victory over the supposedly superior (then) Soviet Union. Isham engages instantly with the anthemic "The Team," a spirited and memorable slice of Copland-esque Americana that echoes Randy Newman's score for The Natural, and lays the groundwork for what turns out to be a simplistic yet delightful piece of work. Too often composers overwrite their less complex subjects, causing an awkward juxtaposition between the visual and audio aspects of films that should have remained two-dimensional. That Isham succeeds without appearing either jaded or sentimental is a testament to his talents and obvious emotional investment in the film's characters. Like the film itself, Miracle the soundtrack is an underdog of sorts, and definitely worth rooting for. ~ James Christopher Monger

$12.65 In the often contradictory world that is hip-hop many have attempted to straddle the fine line between radio-friendly rhymes and backpacker (conscious) respectability. This line defined by the inner need to inform and educate potential listeners against the want of popular acceptance is the cauldron boiling within New York-bred emcee, Shak C. Coming from the crossroads of New York State, Syracuse, Shak C is on a mission to lay the blueprint to commercial acceptance via true-to-life lyrics that both educate and entertain. Early on, Shak C attempted to control his destiny. In high school he excelled, hoping to eventually elevate his finances and secure both his future and the future of his loved ones. It was in high school that he formed a rap crew called The Foundation, and hosted a weekly lunchtime cipher (informal rap battle) drawing crowds so large that the hallways were completely blocked, potentially hindering students from reaching their classrooms. In fact, it was because of these battles that members of The Foundation were threatened with expulsion by the principal for their detraction. After meeting with Shak face to face, and actually seeing him perform, that principal became one of his biggest fans. Shak developed a name locally via rap battles and freestyling on local radio, Z89 FM. Community events ranging from youth speak out marches and the Dorsey Levins talent shows to the annual Juneteenth celebrations allowed Shak to showcase his performance style. After a decision to enroll in Howard University, The Foundation eventually dissolved and Shak stood ...
