Harmonica player and vocalist Sonny Terry cut some stunning material for Gotham in the early '50s. Some of it was issued, and much of it wasn't. This is a healthy chunk of things that were and weren't released, with good remastering embellishing Terry's cutting vocals and splintering harmonica. ~ Ron Wynn
Personnel: Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee (harmonica); Brownie McGhee (guitar, piano); Doc Bagby (piano, organ); James Harris (percussion).
Liner Note Author: Chris Frazer Smith.

Sonny Terry music CDs
$13.85 Despite his statement in the liner notes that "In an era where it is best to play it safe, I chose to take a risk...," there isn't much surprising or risky about young guitarist Joe Bonamassa's fifth studio album. Most of his previous releases have mixed blues covers with his own originals, all played with a rocker's attitude, volume and less-than-subtle approach. This one follows suit and even though he goes on to say that he "wanted to make a blues album, not a rock album that has blues on it," as in the past; it's impossible to claim that he has succeeded with You & Me. That doesn't make this a bad or disappointing disc; quite the contrary, it's a solid blues-rock release and arguably his best work to date. But as early as the second track, an original rocker titled "Bridge to Better Days," Bonamassa takes off on an early Free/Savoy Brown-styled stomper. Things settle down and get more rootsy on the following two slow blues tracks, although a lovely Bonamassa original, "Asking Around for You," adds strings, not exactly a touch most would associate with pure blues. Regardless, it's extremely effective and when the strings return on a nine-and-a-half-minute cover of Led Zeppelin's "Tea for One," it is a ...

Sonny Terry songs
$14.19 WELCOME TO LITTLE MILTON was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
For his last album of the 20th century, soul/blues legend Little Milton gathered together a bunch of friends and admirers to cut 11 songs in a spirited meeting of old and new generations not heard since John Lee Hooker recorded THE HEALER 10 years prior.
In his more than 50 years in the music industry, Little Milton has earned accolades for his singing, but unfortunately his tasty guitar playing has often gotten overlooked. WELCOME rectifies this situation as Milton takes the lead on the Susan Tedeschi duet "Mother Earth," gets heavy with Warren Haynes and Gov't Mule on "I Can't Quit You Baby," and trades licks with G. Love on the percolating "Me and My Woman." Milton's ubiquitous influence on contemporary blues also becomes apparent, particularly on "Right to Sing the Blues," where he easily shows that O.V. Wright wasn't the only R&B artist to influence Robert Cray's soul-blues style. Throughout WELCOME, Milton shows off his remarkable range. He's equally at home crooning with Lucinda Williams on the Bouldeaux Bryant ballad "Love Hurts," funking it up with Keb' Mo' on "Gimmie My Broom," or trading barbs with Peter Wolf on his "Two Loves."

$9.89 This 2005 release of Big Mama Thornton's 1965 studio session in London is a pristine snapshot of the too-often-overlooked blues singer. After her smash hit "Hound Dog" brought her fame in 1953 (Thornton's version predated Elvis Presley's by three years, and unquestionably packs more of a punch), her commercial star began to sink, yet Thornton's gravelly, gutsy wail never lost its luster.
