My Kind Of Girl
$10.69 2 LPs on 1 CD: WHAT EVERY GIRL SHOULD KNOW (1960)/I HAVE DREAMED (1961). Originally released on Columbia. Liner Note Author: Pete Martin . Recording information: 12/11/1959-05/05/1961. Directors: Harry Zimmerman; Jim Harbert. In the early '60s, recording artists like Doris Day often would assemble the songs for their albums by coming up with a concept -- travel songs, Oscar winners, etc. -- and then picking 12 tunes, most of them from among the hundreds of pop standards that came from movie and stage musicals of the '20s, '30s, and '40s, sometimes commissioning a new song or two on the theme to be written. (Actually, all this legwork was done less often by the singer herself than by the A&R person assigned to her at the record label.) This discount-priced two-fer reissue presents two such albums, ...

My Kind Of Girl
$10.69 "2 LP's On 1 CD" B/W "Great Songs Of The 60's"
2 LPs on 1 CD: GLENN MILLER TIME-1965/GREAT SONGS OF THE 60'S. Personnel includes: Ray McKinley (leader); Bobby Hacket (trumpet). Originally released on Epic. Liner Note Authors: John Lissner; Richard Maltby, Jr. Recording information: 01/04/1965-03/22/1965. From four decades or more on, Glenn Miller Time 1965 may seem an unlikely recording project. The year 1965, after all, marked a continuation of the British Invasion in rock & roll music, with the volume and the attitude stepped up several notches amid the success of the Rolling Stones et al., and it was also the year of the folk-rock explosion and dozens of other pop culture phenomena that seem a long way from anything to do with Glenn Miller -- who had been gone just a couple of weeks past 20 years at the time of these recording sessions. But the mid-'60s also saw a less widely publicized but incontestable '40s nostalgia ...

My Kind Of Girl
$34.15 The second and final album by operatic German new wave eccentric Klaus Nomi, 1981's SIMPLE MAN features "From Beyond" and "Just One Look." Japanese remaster in an LP-replica sleeve. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. Coming off such a left-field debut, it was up in the air as to what Klaus Nomi would do for a follow-up. That second album was Simple Man, and if listeners were unsure if the first album was a put-on, this one certainly didn't do much to clear things up. While the album starts out promisingly with an atmospheric fade-in followed by a hard dance number with the occasional Birthday Party-style guitar thrown in, the rest of the album did its damnedest to move the album's overall tone to one of self-parody. Could one really think any differently listening to the hyper-sugary cover of "Just One Look," the faux-country disco number "Rubberband Lazer," or the version of "Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead"? As with the debut album, Nomi's true capabilities are shown off by his versions of classical works -- in this case, "Death" (taken from Henry Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas") ...

My Kind Of Girl
$15.05 Personnel: Giovanna Pessi, Giovanna Pessi (harp); Gjermund Larsen (violin, fiddle, viola); Gjermund Larsen (violin, hardanger fiddle, viola); Tanja Orning (cello); Arve Henriksen (trumpet); Christian Wallumrod (piano, toy piano, harmonium); Per Oddvar Johansen (glockenspiel, drums, percussion). Liner Note Author: Anselm Cybinski. Recording information: Radio Studio Drs, Zurich, Switzerland (10/2006). Photographer: Urban Willi. Norwegian pianist and composer Christian Wallumrod has been experimenting with various sonorities and musical colors since his first trio recording for ECM, No Birch in 1998. That group contained the roots of this one with trumpeter Arve Henricksen and percussionist/drummer Per Oddvar Johansen. Saxophonist Trygve Seim made the group a quartet for 2005's A Year from Easter. The pieces juxtaposed improvisation against tightly constructed themes and melodies, using the interval as the chief vehicle for moving, ever slowly, from one place to another. On The Zoo Is Far, Wallumrod has dropped the saxophone entirely, but created a sextet by adding three string players who include Giovanna Pessi on Baroque harp (an instrument that is constructed differently from the contemporary classical ...
