Larry Hall's "Sandy" is a fine self-released pop/rock single that became a regional hit on the West Coast, got picked up by the Strand label, and went on to make the national Top 15 in 1960. Sandy: A Golden Classics Edition adds 17 tracks to Hall's sole hit, and the light tone of "Sandy" is heard throughout his recordings. Hall's sound is even more mild-mannered than Ricky Nelson and sometimes approaches the delicacy of the Fleetwoods. The recordings are professional productions but with less-crisp fidelity than major-label recordings, and, although there are no lost classics, the songs are good in general. Worthy of specific mention is "I Didn't Ask to Be Born," the ultimate teen lament and possibly the whiniest plaint ever to emit from the mouth of a teen idol. ~ Greg Adams

| | Erik Clampitt Nine Tracks CD (2004)
Sandy & Other Golden Classics album
$13.95 On their debut full-length, Portland, OR, trio Clampitt, Gaddis & Buck wear their folk and country influences proudly on their sleeves. Erik Clampitt's easy vocals highlight the opening track, "Long Train," as Buck Dagger impresses on bass and mandolin. Marley Gaddis makes her first appearance on vocals on the album's second song, "Homeward Track," which again features Clampitt's rootsy guitar and harmonica, and the introduction of Buck Dagger's baritone vocals. The bare-bones musical recipe continues with the haunting "Midnight Train," as the trio's harmonies add to the already powerful swell of the band's bluegrass foundation. Their gospel roots are apparent on "Judgement Day," a simple, straightforward anthem. "High Lonesome Sound" is quite possibly the disc's high watermark, as the threesome relaxes and lets loose on the Gaddis/Clampitt original, reverting back to a casual yet powerful approach. The band covers the American roots classic "In the Pines" on the eighth track, reveling in a cappella harmony. The disc comes to a close with the steady "Don't Laugh," another wholesome and refreshing example of the power of straightforward Americana. Nine Tracks was recorded at Type Foundry Studio and the Alberta Music Collective in Portland in 2003, and was released on Lelp Recordings in early 2004. Matt Stark and Jennifer Stefanick make guest appearances on four songs. ~ Stephen Cramer

| | Legends Facts & Fiction CD (2006) (Import) With DVD
Sandy & Other Golden Classics CD music
$11.99 Facts and Figures is the sound of complete opposites coming together perfectly. The Legends combine the military precision of Kraftwerk and DAF with soft '60s style pop melodies; a hate of dance floors with dance music and perfectionism with the naive curiosity of a beginner. Over a classic album length of 10 songs and 34:45 minutes The Legends deliver an eclectic, still amazingly kept together piece of art. Sublime! Facts and Figures is Johan Angergård's (Acid House Kings, Club 8, Poprace) 12th album and the 3rd with The Legends. Yet, it still feels as if he’s only just begun. The Legends’ curiosity and lust is obvious and they’ve stayed true to their indie ideals. Facts and Figures is very playful. The Legends experiment with brand new sounds and combine them with every brilliant pop tune they’ve ever heard and every band they’ve ever listened to. Eclectic and truly amazing! The first 1000 copies of Facts and Figures come with a bonus tour documentary DVD. It’s supposed to work as a warning for those who plan on starting a band.
Album number three, and a third entirely new direction for the Legends, who by this point no longer made any pretense of being a "mysterious" nine-piece group of unknowns rather than a one-man studio project of the prolific popsmith Johan Angergård. More than any of Angergârd's other outfits, the Legends make pop music with overt reference to other pop music, and Facts and Figures is no exception. Just for starters, the album shares its opening line with U2's The Joshua Tree, and there's at least ...

$15.89 This is Montreal-based Deadbeat aka Scott Monteith's fourth full-length release on the ~scape label. Since the release of his previous outing, New World Observer in March 2005, Monteith has spent the vast majority of his time on the road, honing his skills as a master craftsman of genre defying electronic dance music. Though fans of Monteith's previous ~scape full lengths might find it difficult to envision his music as the soundtrack to a rollicking dance floor, Journeyman's Annual is the first to showcase an updated version of the Deadbeat sound that has quietly been overtaking his more meditative work over the last ...
